I have two 80 meter antennas. Is it possible to program the band data
output on the K3 for 80 meters # 1 and # 2? I couldn't find an answer to this in the manual. 73, Dave ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Dave,
The band data (when decoded) will allow you to connect both of your 80 meter antennas to the K3 - one to ANT1 and the other to ANT2 (assuming you have the KAT3 installed). Your external antenna switching relay system (working from the band data decode) is responsible for connecting the correct 80 meter antenna to ANT1 and the other one to ANT2. The relay system should connect both of them when you are on 80 meters. Then you use the K3 ANT button to switch between ANT1 and ANT2. The same system can be used to handle two antennas on any one band. It is all in the way you set up your band decoder and your antenna switching relay system - there are many possibilities, and will vary from one installation to another. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/24/2011 2:29 PM, [hidden email] wrote: > I have two 80 meter antennas. unfortunately not, it's just one BCD code per band. 73, Olli - DH8BQA ----- Original Message ----- From: <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Cc: <[hidden email]> Sent: Wednesday, August 24, 2011 8:29 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Auto antenna switching >I have two 80 meter antennas. Hi Guy and all,
You could "kind of" do this with the DIGOUT1 signal from the ACC connector. It can be programmed OFF (floating, open-drain output, you need a pull up if you want a high) or ON (pulled down to ground). The Elecraft Owner's manual describes it on page 55 and here is what the KE7X K3 book says: (Figure 7 16.) This output signal is a general-purpose, open-drain output that may be programmed (OFF = floating, ON = pulled down to ground) on a per-band and a per-antenna basis (if the KAT3 ATU is installed). For example, you might use this feature to turn on the PR6 six meter preamp only when the six meter band and the six meter antenna are selected. To program DIGOUT1, tune the K3 Main receiver to the desired band with the selected antenna and go to CONFIG:DIGOUT1 and set it to ON. The maximum sinking current is 250 mA and the maximum load voltage is 25 VDC. So, "kind of" means you could program DIGOUT1 to be ON (pulled low) when you are on 80 and have ANT2 (for example) selected. For any other combination of band/ant DIGOUT1 would be floating (or pulled up). This would work if you are using an external band decoder to select antennas and you simply want to activate another switch or relay to switch in one of two 80 meter antennas. Hmm, I was somehow under the impression that was "needed for something", but reading it all again from scratch, that is the digout0 which apparently only works in relation to some transverter function. Gotcha.
Is what goes on with DIGOUT0 "firmwired" in the firmware, or is that available somehow with some sneaky procedure? TWO signals I could work, one of them via software command to K3, would be simply splendiferous and get rid of ugly relay logic board. But I know I'm reaching here... 73, Guy. E.g. does something else when KIO3 is set to NOR, besides stay high.

Guy,
Thanks for your questions - you are giving me ideas about how to reconfigure and automate my antenna switching to take advantage of both ANT1 and ANT2. Right now, I use only a single connector on the KAT3, and have given up on automating the band selection for now, so I operate manual switches. I have 4 HF and 6 meter coax lines coming into the shack, and one of those comes from a remote 6 position antenna relay. Of course, my situation is a bit unique because once in the shack, I switch those 4 antenna feedlines among 3 transceivers. The K2 gets priority, the FT-847 is second priority and the 3rd transceiver can take whichever feedlines that are not being used by the other 2. An advantage of my arrangement is that when no feedline is selected (or relay power is off), the K3 and the FT-847 are connected to a dummy load (the 3rd transceiver operator has to remember to switch to a dummy load manually. On some bands (80, 40 and 20) , I have 3 antennas either up now or in my antenna plan, so that is why I have chosen the manual switching - automating it with only ANT1 or ANT2 was not sufficient, I have to figure out how to handle that. The ACC outputs from the KRC2 may be the answer, but selecting the correct ACC output is still a manual operation. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/25/2011 4:33 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: > E.g. does something else when KIO3 is set to NOR, besides stay high. > > On Thu, Aug 25, 2011 at 4:13 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV<[hidden email]>wrote: > >> Gotcha. >> >> Is what goes on with DIGOUT0 "firmwired" in the firmware, or is that >> available somehow with some sneaky procedure? As far as I know the only use of DIGOUT 0 is to indicate low power operation for a given transverter band: > With KIO3 set to TRN or HF-TRN, the DIGOUT0 line (ACC, pin 6) will > output 0 V when low power mode is selected for the current > transverter band (CONFIG:XVn PWR). At all other times, DIGOUT0 > will be floating (Hi-Z). It would be nice if DIGOUT 0 could be used for other functions (e.g., per-band/per-mode like DIGOUT 1, or generate a 500 msec pulse in response to the ATU TUNE button when the KAT3 is off/not installed) if the K3 is not used with transverters. 73, ...
