Wayne & Eric,
Could I make an addition to the "list" please? Back in the 70's I built the Accu Keyer and Accu Memory that was published in QST. It was almost the size of a K2 by the time I got finished with it and it had ACS (Automatic Character Spacing) which I loved dearly. I would sure like to see that feature added to the K3 along with a menu item that would be used to turn ACS on and off. As a matter of fact I would like to see the same thing in the K1 and K2 too. I would like to second that request. I still use the CMOS Super Keyer 1 which came after the Accukeyer and it has ACS which I miss when using the K2 and (soon - maybe this weekend - 35% assembled so far) K3. Once you get used to ACS, it is hard to do without it. The K1EL, NorCal, and PK4 keyers, and others, have ACS.
73, John W2XS (BTW - IMHO - the software implementation of ACS in the Logikeyers, direct descendants of the CMOS Super Keyer, is not as good as the older, hardware-only implementation).

You can add me to the list of persons that would like to see that feature. I
do have the CMOS Super Keyer 1 as well and it's hard to get it right after 15 years of operating and suddenly missing ACS. No top priority, but I would like to drop a separate piece of equipment. 73's, Evert PA2KW -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of John W2XS Sent: Friday, May 23, 2008 21:13 To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Automatic Character Spacing I would like to second that request. So when we have a optimized adaptive protocol that adapts to available band conditions and available bandwidth and then enables or disables the codecs accordingly, what then? You might be doing "digital", i.e. text mode, and then start sending voice bits multiplexed over the same stream. Heavens! Frankly, this means that the only reasonable mechanism for the future is a scheme based on transmit bandwidth. You tell the radio how much bandwidth it has to work with (or more likely it already knows based on the frequency and your class of license) and then it figures out which bit rates can be supported and enables the appropriate codecs. It can then fill the Shannon box any way it knows how. Oh yes, the future could look mighty different! Please add me to the list of those who -don't- want ACS.
Or, at least make it selectable. Keyers provide more than enough "crutches" now .... 73! ACS, would be nice (used it for the last 20 yrs) Low priority (to me), I'm sure there are more important issues 73's, Evert PA2KW _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
