K3 Beta 4.42 and LP Bridge

mike
Downloaded and install the new beta 4.42 for the K3 and have started getting a failure with LP Bridge "The object involved has disconnected from its clients" - the two clients are HRD on VCP#1 and Commander on VCP#2. LP Bridge stops interfacing with the K3 which in turn upsets HRD - it sends a message that it is no longer communicating with the K3.

Anyone else run into this? I am gong to back off the beta and see if the problem goes away.

Re: K3 Beta 4.42 and LP Bridge

Well, that wasn't it. Backing off to version 4.39 did not help. Strange, as that was the only change to the K3 setup. I did also updated the KPA500 from 1.09 to 1.11, but it is not even on during this test. I cannot figure out why LP Bridge would all of a sudden stop working. I can check the cables, but I would be surprised if the cable failed. cause.

For what it is worth, Wayne said that beta helped the problem with HRD
turning off the K3 AGC.
My understanding is that this is not a problem with HRD when LP-Bridge
is in the picture too - but then I am going only by the few reports that
I have seen in passing.
As far as I know, the AGC off problem only occurs with HRD connected
directly to the K3 and not through LP-Bridge.

You might want to also post your problem to the LP-Pan Yahoo group -
that is where most of the questions related to LP-Bridge are aired.

Thanks for the post, Don. Yes, I am aware of the HRD/K3 direct connect that played havoc with the AGC. It is what precipitated my move to LP Bridge! I am stumped with this new problem as it has been working perfectly for months..in fact until I loaded the new K3 beta. I will check on the LP-Pan yahoo group.

This problem with a logging program seeing the K3 with LP-bridge
"disconnecting" the K3 from the logging program is an old one.

It existed for much more than a year.   The frequency was low and tolerable.

The problem has been made lots worse with the newer versions of the K3
firmware which expanded the S meter range and the version of LPBRIDGE
which reads it.   It is unusable here.   The setup is simply K3/logging
program/SKIMMER.  The newer version of LP-BRIDGE also has the same
problem with older K3 firmware versions even though it is supposedly
backwards compatible.

The older version of LPBRIDGE can't work with newer K3 firmwares.

This makes it impossible for me to upgrade either LPBRIDGE or K3 firmware.

Not a very satisfactory situation.   It appears nobody wants to own this
problem and look for a fix.

Re: K3 Beta 4.42 and LP Bridge

mike
Thanks everyone for the responses both on and off the reflector. I don't believe there is a problem with LP-Bridge and the new K3 FW beta as I was originally investigating. I decided to re-install LP-Bridge and in doing so upgraded to LPB2 (LP-Bridge 2) - I know, I know, I introduced another variable - but what the heck it is just a hobby, right? Anyway, all appears well in the shack...everyone is talking to everyone K3/P3/KPA500 /HRD/LogBookV5 /Commander /cwSkimmer/ Skimmer to Commander/ Run SkimmerCC11! I believe the move to LPB2 added nothing and that a complete re-install of LP-Bridge would have fixed the corruption problem just as well. Back to operating...

Hi Brian. Wayne forwarded this to me. I receive the reflector in digest
mode and haven't seen the actual thread yet.

This is all news to me. I have not received a support email about it nor
has it been mentioned on the LP-PAN reflector by any LP-Bridge users
AFAIK. I run LP-Bridge 24/7 with several apps connected, including
Skimmer, and never have disconnects. I always keep my K3 updated with
the latest release, but don't have Beta 4.42 loaded.

I asked Wayne for some more background info on it and will investigate
tonight.

If this problem really exists, or even if it doesn't, I hope those who
figure it out will keep posting here. I am a happy LP-Bridge user, and
would like to stay that way. If a new release of K3 firmware causes any
problems, I'd like to hear. I'm sure there are others in the same
situation. If it's just a matter of S-meter polling, there must be some way
to turn that off for those who don't care. Anyway, please post info as it
develops. Much appreciated.

Thanks to all,

The latest K3 firmware revisions include a high-accuracy S-meter
command ("SMH") that was targeted at the S-meter Lite application.
It's possible that other apps are using it, too, and trying to poll
for it too fast. In any case, Larry and I will investigate.

Re: K3 Beta 4.42 and LP Bridge

In reply to this post by mike
The story continues.... My elation at finding a fix with the new LPB2 program was premature. I was suddenly plagued with the evil "HRD turns the K3 AGC off" problem, so I attempted to re-install regular LP-Bridge and set about trying to find out why I was suddenly having problems. I found that every time I keyed the K3, HRD lost connection to LP-Bridge. Mind you this was the exact setup that had been working for months before I attempted the K3 FW 4r42 update. Why the keying causes a disconnect, I cannot tell you. I am very sure it is not RF.

I decided to go back to LPB2 and fight the "AGC turns off battle" since it seems to work in all manner except for the unexpected loss of AGC. I looked for more solutions on the Net and found a very recent posting from KD6X who said he found the problem occurring only with the P3 in line. His solution was to keep the K3 to P3 connection at 38400 Baud, but set the P3 RS232 port which connects to the CPU to 9600 Baud. That way, the direct connection of HRD (through the P3) to the K3 will slow down the over polling of the K3. I am trying that idea using LPB2.

I have added support for K3 beta v4.42 to LP-Bridge and posted v0.9.994
update on my LP-Bridge page at http://www.telepostinc.com/LPB.html

I tested this with the latest HRD 4.1 beta and it seems to be solid. I
also added the SMH command to the "speed governed" list of commands to
minimize the chance of this command overloading the K3 serial buffer.
You should switch back to LP-Bridge and not use LPB2, because LPB2 does
not limit the polling rate of SMH as LP-Bridge does. In general, K3
users should use LP-Bridge. LPB2 was mainly designed to support other
radios.

FYI, great improvements, thanks for all the work,
but I fear I bare bad news, it's also a case of 2 steps forward and 1 step back.

Pro's:
I'm using LP-Bridge, v0.0.994 and S Meter Lite v2.22 with K3  beta 4.42
S-meter Lite now works great, with no freezing like  it previously displayed.

Con's:
Now I can NOT use either PowerSDR/IF v1.19.3.5 or NaP3 beta 2.
As soon as I start either pgm, S Meter Lite starts drawing a straight line,
at the signal level last seen before I started either sdr pgm.
As soon as I close the sdr pgm S meter Lite resumes working as before.

I use a softrock with the if out of the K3 feeding a Delta 44 soundcard,
all ports are real serial ports, no usb involved.

I may need to clarify...
I meant the K3 port on the computer is a serial port not using a USB.

Also I am using DXLabs not HRD, so I can not address any agc issues, pro or con.

My post is simply to inform about the problem of running PowerSDR/IF or NaP3
while running S Meter Lite as one of the virtual ports of LP-Pan Bridge v0.994
and K3 Beta v4.42

Larry, you're very public-spirited to try to adapt your software to work
around the flaws of ill-behaved programs, but I do have a burning question:
will those who use LP-Bridge have to update when switching to K3 v4.42, or
will it be okay to stick with the current version of LP-Bridge? I'm
currently using 0.998  in conjunction with LP-Pan and PSDR-IF. I just don't
want to break anything.

Thanks much,

I, too may be having this problem. I upgraded to K3 Beta 4.42
prior to putting my KPA500 in service. I had been using LP Bridge for
years with great enthusiasm. Since installing the K3 firmware  upgrade,
LP Bridge fails and closes each time I attempt to use it to send RTTY
with HRD when LP Bridge is in use. Without LP Bridge, no problem sending
RTTY with HRD with no other change in setup. The problem is not related
to the amp as it occurs when the amp is not connected. Thought the
problem was LP Bridge, but uninstall and reinstall did not correct the
problem.

Hi Sam. Sorry for the delay in response. I get the reflector in digest
mode, so I don't see postings sometimes for hours. I subscribe to so
many reflectors on which 90% of the traffic is superfluous, that I am
forced to use digest mode to keep the traffic at an acceptable level. A
direct email or posting to the LP-PAN reflector would be faster.

You need to have the SDR app set to poll slightly slower than LP-Bridge.
This is because polling from the SDR is passed through when it's
running, and then some additional commands like SMH are added in
LP-Bridge. This takes some additional time, and hence the slower polling
rate in the SDR. I didn't play around much with the minimums in each
program to see what differential is required, but the 250ms LPB / 300ms
SDR that I normally use works fine here.

Thanks for your response Larry,
not knowing which pgm was the culprit,
I posted here on the Elecraft list,
figuring _all_ the different pgm authors were reading here.

And since only after the new K3 4.42 beta release
was I now able to actually run S-Meter Lite,
at the same time as other pgms I wanted to run, such as,
DXLabs, VE7CC, CWSkimmer MultiPSK, N3FJP logs, to name a few.

Your slower polling rates of 250ms LPB / 300ms SDR worked perfectly!

You software gurus are just amazing,
we (users) are forever in debt for *all* of your contributions
that make our hobby more and more fun.
