Thanks Wayne and everyone at Elecraft:
The K3 mods and improved Utility works really great. Europe is coming in S6 - S9 on 80 mtrs in NY through heavy QRN and it just seems like the K3 is working at its best. I would have to say that my admiration of the K3 has certainly gone UP another level tonight. 73's Tony K2ZLS _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I agree with K2ZLS. This is the 20th software update for me since June (a rate of 2 to 4 per month). Things just keep getting better. I happen to also be listening to 80 meters right now as I do some work on the PC and there are some nice strong signals on the band.
With the new utility, it is fun to see my call and name scroll across the display when the unit is turned on. Thanks, Elecraft! 73, John W2XS (ps - any improvements to AM reception would be appreciated. And, automatic character spacing in the keyer would be great). <quote author="K2ZLS"> Thanks Wayne and everyone at Elecraft: The K3 mods and improved Utility works really great. I have about 40 years of managing and working in the software development process and have seldom seen the accuracy and rapidity been as consistently applied to the process as Elecraft has done with its Beta program. The K3 is a VERY complex radio and the requests from the users so diverse that I just have to stand in awe of the work Wayne and group do so consistently. This is one investment that keeps going up in value. Now if they could tutor a few folks on Wall Street I could sleep better.

With the exception of the pre on 6 and the voice recorder, I have all the options available on this radio and (the sub is en route at this moment). Why did I buy the whole Enchilada kit? Because Elecraft closely listens to its users and the principals and volunteers do amazingly well at fulfilling reasonable requests. IN fact, they seem to provide these requests not with reluctance but with great joy. This interest, along with the quality of the K3 contains is what made me decide to spend this kind of money with this company instead of another. At this economic time, it's important to support the industry you believe is trying hard to be the best and this kind of effort deserves to succeed. There's a quote I suspect most of us who have worked for functionally insular management have heard that goes: "We the willing, led by the unknowing, have done so much, with so little, for so long, that we can do anything with nothing". Obviously the "unknowing" above does not apply to Elecraft but I'll paraphrase that and apply it to what I might imagine is a banner going across the company's Marquis: "We the willing, lead by the knowing, have done so much, with what is available, for so long, that we will try everything to make what we do even better." So we have 2.78 and yes I'm happy with the improvements of the software.
There are a few categories of software-updates: 1. bug fixes (nothing to cheer about, the bugs should not have been there, way to go Elecraft how quick you fix those bugs) 2. nice to haves (indeed nice: my callsign scrolling in the display, but I can do without that) 3. further improvements in essential performance (improve filtering including notch, transmit IMD, improving user interface, extending possibilities of use of TX and RX, etc) 4. need to haves (like 2 RXs on 2 different bands) There are probably more categories if you think about it. I'm quite happy with the first two categories. I cheer if improvements of category 3 come along. My house is too small if a category 4 improvement happens. 73 and HNY to all. I'm working on #4 as we speak (and you and I both will need bigger houses :) It's a very complex change to the firmware, necessitating lots of re-testing. But the basics are already working, and I'll be offering an early version to risk-takers within a week or two. #3 is ongoing. It slowed down a bit recently because Lyle (our DSP guru) is on a long, well-deserved vacation. But knowing Lyle, he'll be working on DSP-related improvements by 5 AM the day he gets back. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Dear Wayne,
Are you aware that the download utility for the Mac OSX is still at the previous version, 1.1.12.22? This is as of Friday, approx 9:30PM PST. I'm sure 1.1.12.29 will be up soon for OSX, but wanted to be sure you knew. We mac users also want to set up a power-on banner! The download utility is a slick program, by the way, and is about to get even slicker. All best, Oliver Johns W6ODJ On Jan 9, 2009, at 8:46 AM, wayne burdick wrote: > Gary Smith wrote: > >> "We the willing, lead by the knowing, have done so much, with what is >> available, for so long, that we will try everything to make what we >> do even better." > > <blush> > > Thanks, Gary. Dear Bob,
Thanks for the reply. The problem wasn't my browser. On Friday evening the web page said 1.2.1.6, but the file "K3UtilityOSX.zip" when unzipped did not contain that new version. Now (Saturday evening) they've fixed it. It now contains the correct version. Thank you guys at Elecraft. Now I can have my banner.
