K3 - CQWWSSB Contest

Don Rasmussen
20 meters is wall to wall with strong SSB signals this weekend. Take the opportunity to connect an A/B switch to your best older transceiver vs. K3 and you may find in some instances that the K3 is not optimally configured. My settings were changed for SLOPE, THR, and SLOW. Also changed I/II saved settings for SSB.

I have yet to find another transceiver that can beat K3, but I have found some instances where the K3 wasn't the best before optimizing the settings with a critical ear and a standard (another radio I know and like).

Don, If it is possible, could you share what settings that were changed from what to what that you liked better?

Thanks,  Len K3LJ

Elecrafters,

There are many possible settings and I´m sure you guys have spent a lot of time figuring out the best one.Maybe some of you could post his/her favourite settings every now and then- like a K3 cookbook!!

K3 - KRX3: AF Gain

Mitch Wolfson DJØQN
I have the main receiver's AF Gain set to HI, but I can't find a way to
enable that function on the KRX3. Am I missing something, or is this a
feature request?

With the main receiver on HI, the difference between the two receivers is
too great to be able to hear very well on the KRX3, at least for the hard of
hearing.

Mitch DJØQN

I second that!

I participated in the CQ WW SSB in teh single band single opp high power class. At the end of the weekend I had 1236 Q´s and 109 multipliers which I think is not so bad considering the fact that I was not able to use the amp the entire weekend and hardly got any cluster spots due to a bad packet connection.
It was the first time I entered the single band single opp class and although I have done some contesting, I still have much to learn. You might have heard me as PI4COM.

The K3 didn´t let me down and I think it was a great partner in this weekends contest. That said, I think life could have been somewhat easier had I known how to set I up correctly.
This was the first time I could really use my K3 (serial # 1849) in crowded band conditions so I´m still learning how to get the most out of its performance.

A couple of months ago I read something about some sort of manual on how to set up your K3 for specific situations. Unfortunately I have not heard from it since.

I to would really like to have some guide lines on how to set up the K3.

P.S. The only problems I had with the K3 was the VOX button and the SSB power. Regarding the VOX,  if I had to cough, I regularly switched bands.
The SSB power out put problem is a know problem and I have complete faith in the guys at Elecraft that they will get that fixed.

I've heard from a few local contesters in the past two days who claim that the K3 isn't one of the better ssb contesting radios based on just a little time with the radio.  I couldn't disagree more with that.  I spent a lot of time tuning into the most crowded parts of 20M and I was able to distinctly copy layer after layer of stations on top of one another.  My other radios' receivers would mostly turn to indistinguishable mush in that situation, although the Orion did better than the Yaesus. I also spent much time carefully adjusting the K3's shift/width for the best combination of narrow selectivity and intelligibiity.

What worked for me was 1.8Khz filters, 1.6Khz width, 0.95Khz FC (shift), AGC SLP 3 (important not to use too much AGC compression), AGC THR 8.  When I'm not contesting, I turn AGC SLP to a higher value.  I used flat RX EQ.  On the transmit side, I used CMP at 23.

Setting the AF GAIn HI or LO in the CONFIG menu sends the appropriate
commands to both main and sub receivers if the KRX3 is installed and
enabled.

The gain imbalance was fixed in firmware release 2.36/1.90.  I also
confirm it is fixed in the latest development release.  I have not
specifically checked this in any interim releases.

Which firmware do you have loaded in yhour K3?

Re: K3 - KRX3: AF Gain

Mitch Wolfson DJØQN
Hi Lyle,

Thanks for the tip.....I am using 2.46, and it didn't work until you pointed
me in the right direction.

Since I had the AF Gain set to HI before I installed the KRX3, I now
disabled the KRX3 and changed AF to LO. Then I enabled the KRX3 and changed
AF to HI afterwards, and that solved that problem.

Now I notice that my KRX3 sensitivity is much lower than the main receiver,
which wasn't the case when I installed it. I will try to figure that problem
out on my own or otherwise contact support.

Thanks again & 73,
Mitch DJØQN

Make sure that the KRX3 is fully mated with  the SUBIN board
connectors.

Check your XFIL gain settings in the SUB vs MAIN.  If using a CW filter, it could be you are not compensating for the additional insertion loss of narrow filters in the SUB.

Also, double check the KRX3 antenna selection.  When mine went nearly
deaf, it was because I managed to unwittingly put it in a state where it
selected the unused antenna port.

Re: K3 - KRX3: AF Gain

In reply to this post by Bill W4ZV
Bill,

It turned out to be a simple configuration problem as I had suspected.

The KRX3 had lost the antenna setting when I disabled and reenabled it to
fix the AF gain problem, so I only had to use BSET and tap [ANT] to choose
the same ANT again as VFO A.

Now all is well!

Thanks to everyone that responded!

Mitch DJØQN

KRX3 Sensitivity

Roy Davis
In reply to this post by Bill W4ZV
I am sure this has been addressed, but I cannot find where I may have
received and saved comments on this in my files received from the list.  I
apologize if it has.

My KRX3 sub receiver doesn't seem to have the sensitivity as the main
receiver.  The volume level is lower, and must be cranked up higher to equal
the level of the main.  But, also the signal is just not as strong on the
sub as the main.

Any input or help with this is appreciated.  It is mu understanding that the
sub is supposed to be equal to the main receiver in its' capability.

Thanls,

Roy - WK4Y
