K3:CW send decode on a Straight key?

juergen piezo
Hi

Is there anyway of making the K3's CW decoder work on the straight key port? I am using an external logikey and would like to see what I am sending  now and then.

John

Re: [Elecraft] K3:CW send decode on a Straight key?

I'd like to see this as well as I enjoy being able to see the TX decode
when the paddles are in the back of the radio but when I run for a
contest the paddles go into the K1EL keyer and the straight key port is
used.  Would be nice to be able to always use the K1EL and not lose the
decode feature.

John -
To check your CW why not use a program such as CwGet v1.65 by UA9OV?
This is excellent for checking your Morse sending using either a
straight key or a bug.

Alternatively, you can send on an external simple r.f. oscillator using
a straight key and listen to it on your K3.  The decoder on the K3 works
very well in that way.

Same here.

I never understood why a straight key doesn't decode and is unable to drive the data mode generator.
A strange omission, a lot of straight keyers out there...

Julian, G4ILO
This one was asked before some time ago, by me, and was answered if I recall correctly by Lyle. Basically it just isn't as simple as it might seem to connect the output of the monitor to the decoder, which is designed to take input from the DSP not the sidetone monitor.

The K3 can display your code from the paddle because the paddle provides dot and dash closures and the speed is set by a control, making it a simple lookup. From a straight key it would have to figure out your speed before it could even try to determine what you were sending.

Hi Julian,

It's never that simple :-)

But the RX decoding algo's are already there so why not use them on the straight key input as well?
It would also make a nice monitor&exercise device for your straight-key handwriting quality :-)

Have you heard what most people sound like sending with a straight key?
CW decoding algorithm's are available which do a pretty good job on
keyer or computer sent CW, given the local QRM/N. The code being sent by
machine is perfectly spaced and the elements are the right duration.

They're terrible at decoding manually sent morse.
The tell tale "swing" we hear and recognize as CW sent with a bug makes
the algorithm's choke trying to guess what was sent. Straight key is
even worse as both elements are manually generated, and unless being
sent by someone with 50 years experience with the key aren't close to
good timing and spacing.

Aren't there more important things to do with the valuable firmware
memory than to turn the K3 into an expensive code practice oscillator?

Hi Robert,

Guess I'm a consistancy freak :-)

Being a fan of good old straight key handwork I personally was surprised by the omission of decode and data-keying this way. Since the decoder is already there it shouldn't be a new DSP eater.

Meanwhile I'm used to it and yes, you're right, more important things to focus on....

I asked the same question some time ago because I wanted to connect a Palm
Radio Infrared receiver to the K3's Keyer port. Wayne answered:

My solution was to use the Paddle input instead and if you want to use a
straight key I can recommend PocketDigi to decode the sidetone - it is a
multi-platform multimode decoder available at www.sourceforge.net for
free. I use it on the PC and on my PPC and it works fine.

Hi Werner

Thanks for all the ideas and suggestions.

Its not that important, I just asked in case there was a quick fix.

I could also just use my K1EL Winkey and monitor that  in Windows. I just like using my Logikey at the moment.
