K3 CW signal

KEN-3
I know people say that the K3 has a very good CW signal but I was blown away this morning on a 20m contact this morning when, right after the 579 signal report, the op said "UR RIG HAS VY CLEAN NOTE SOUNDS LIKE A K3" on the opening exchange!   He was running 1980's Heathkit gear and didn't know what I was running.

Kudos to the Elecraft team for a rig that is identifiable for the qualify of it's signal.

Yes, actually one of my clubmates (the DX Hogs, MVDXCC.org) came up to
me at a meeting and complimented me on my CW keying. Like a lot of DX
clubs, ours has a membership that includes a lot of older guys (just
to give you some idea, there are 29 members on the Honor Roll), and
many of them haven't bought a new radio since the days of the
FT-1000D. Nonetheless, when a new rig does enter the roster, the K3 is
the radio of choice, and its CW is the big selling point.

Here's a real "two fer" comment. I recently built an ultra-stable VFO and
use it to control the frequency of a 1954 Globe King 500 (which has been
extensively key shaped!). In a recent QSO, someone who works me regularly
with my K3/KPA-500 sent "b4 u told me u wr using the GK 500 i was sure u
wr using the K3, the signal sounds great."

Funny you should mention that Ken.  Right after this weekend's CONTEST I
send the following e-mail to one of the guys in my contest club.  He has
a multi-multi (that's multiple radio/multiple operator) contest station
entirely using K3's.  I've edited out his callsign to respect his privacy.

Hello,

I just wanted to let you know that I listened quite critically to your
40M signal Saturday night.  After EU SR and before the Asia/Pacific
stuff got really rolling I had some time on my hands.

Anyway, K9ABC had one of the BEST sounding signals I've ever heard.
Very crisp, no clicks, etc.  I was able to listen with my K3 right up
close on both sides of your signal without even having to crank the
filters in tight.  That's much more than I can say for other signals on
the band.

You've got everything dialed in just right!
