K3 DATA A help needed

Paul Milward
Hi
I moved my laptop computer offsite for a few hours this morning. On return I
reconnected the stereo cables from I/O on the K3 to the I/O on the laptop.
Everything worked flawlessly prior to the move for PSK operation. The rig still
receives and the laptop still decodes signals...but the Rig will not transmit
when the software/soundcard is activated. I have the K3 set to DATA A and VOX is
engaged. I did not change anything on the radio or in the soundcard software. I
am using DIGIPAN 2.0.
I did contact my ISP this morning prior to moving the laptop offsite. I had an
issue connecting to the internet and we, the ISP phone tech and I, reworked
passwords for network access and email. I deleted Temporary Internet files,
cookies and history at his direction. But no changes were made to sound card
settings.
Any suggestions? I really want my PSK fix. Any help appreciated.
Paul, NU4C

It is highly likely Windows reset the volume settings, even more so now that most sound cards have sense enabled on the jacks (to tell the user what port is plugged in).  Double check output levels and output device to ensure the port you are using to transmit to the K3 is indeed what Digipan is using.

Change the display to show alc activity.  Then try a transmitt while
adjusting your volume level controls on the PC.   You can do this it
test mode or turn the power to 0 watts.

If you are getting a signal into the k3 you should be able to get the
alc to flicker and then you know you are getting signal in.  If you get
nothing on the alc then you have to trouble shoot the PC output.  Also
you might have to adjust the line in settings.

This was pointed out to me as a check when I was having JT65 problems
and it helped me identify a sound card problem.

Obviously something changed in the sound output since you unplugged
everything so now you get the fun in finding it.

I hope this helps.

What do you mean by "ALC goes wild" ? 5-7 bars on the ALC meter is
your target. This may not be what you're accustomed to with other
rigs.

FB Paul.  Keep in mind you want 4-5 bars of ALC when running audio based
data modes like PSK or AFSK.  I know this is contrary to other radios
but the K3 is not like other radios.  :)  So adjust your soundcard
volume output and/or your line-in gain so that you have 4 bars and the
5th bar flickering.

Re: Fw: K3 DATA A help needed

Don Wilhelm-4
In reply to this post by Iain MacDonnell - N6ML-2
Iain (and all),

5 to 7 bars on the ALC meter is for voice.  For data modes, the target
is 4 to 5 bars.

The onset of ALC is indicated by the 5th bar - below that, the "ALC"
meter acts like a "VU" meter to allow you to adjust the level.  If you
do not provide sufficient audio to the K3, you will experience "power
creep" because the K3 tries to increase the power output to the level
you have set on the power knob.

When operating data modes with the K3, ignore the age-old advice to
adjust the audio level to control the power output - that advice may
work with other radios, but just will not work with the K3 (nor the K2)
- adjust the audio level for the proper input and use the K3 power knob
to set your desired power level.
