Hi
K3 in DATA mode has no output if 'LINE IN' is used. USB/LSB works fine for data modes, but DATA (DATA A) has zero output with LINE IN ( there is not even a whisper of signal with my LP-100A). If I use MIC instead of LINE IN; then I get an output. Have done a factory reset to no avail; and tried all the various setting (line levels, CMP, MIC etc) - as I get output with USB; it means that the 'LINE IN' is working in that mode at least. I think my K3 is broken... anything else I can try? thanks 73 John VE3NFK |

Be sure the Tx Audio source (MIC SEL menu entry) in DATA A mode is set
to LINE IN and not MIC. The audio source in DATA mode selection is independent of the audio source in SSB modes. 73, Lyle KK7P > K3 in DATA mode has no output if 'LINE IN' is used. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

tnx for the very prompt reply Lyle...
I just checked again.... DATA mode A; main menu Mic Select Line In and same results - absolutely no power out 73 John VE3NFK |

The next step us to set line in/out levels, also in the menu (tech on?). The actual name eludes me, I'm remoting to the K3 while traveling and didn't look at the .pdf files I carry in the phone.
And then to confirm signals at the sound card (bad cables, wrong source, etc.). My line out is 003 to the SignaLink for example. 73, Rick wa6nhc Tiny iPhone 5 keypad, typos are inevitable On Jan 19, 2013, at 11:22 AM, VE3NFK <[hidden email]> wrote: > tnx for the very prompt reply Lyle... > > I just checked again.... John,
I believe Lyle intended you to check the source of your audio. I assume you are using an interface box of some kind. Many interface boxes have the ability to change the output from Mic Level (usually the default) to line level. Consult your interface box documentation to find out how to make that change. If you are using a sound card directly, check to be certain line out is enabled for record and is not muted. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/19/2013 2:22 PM, VE3NFK wrote: > tnx for the very prompt reply Lyle... > > I just checked again.... thanks for all the help guys...
After I 'cranked' 'line' to maximum; I was able to get to 75% of full power... So i guess I will leave it that. Sincerely appreciate all the support - now - what am I doing wrong with my APRS 2 meter setup (previous post) with no answers :-) thanks again. 73 John VE3NFK |

John,
That does seem like your audio input is set for Mic level output. With the K3, you cannot judge "sufficient audio" by the power output. The manual covers this situation, but here is how to set the audio level for data modes. First set the K3 into TX TEST so you don't disturb other hams (or you could use a dummy load). Now, increase the audio level until you see 4 bars solid with the 5th bar blinking on the ALC meter. (Don't worry that you are driving the K3 into ALC - you will not be - ALC action is indicated by the 5th bar, those below are there to give you an indication of an adequate audio level). If you cannot obtain that 5th bar just flickering with the K3 Line-in level control (Mic gain), then you will have to either increase the audio from your interface box or soundcard output. Once you have set the audio level as above, adjust your desired power level with the power knob. Failure to follow this setup will create "power creep" in your RF output because of the way the K3 measures and controls power. Your APRS problem may be related, but then I really don't know. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/19/2013 3:51 PM, VE3NFK wrote: > thanks for all the help guys... > > > After I 'cranked' 'line' to maximum; I was able to get to 75% of full > power... > > So i guess I will leave it that. > > Sincerely appreciate all the support > > - now - what am I doing wrong with my APRS 2 meter setup (previous post) > with no answers :-) > > ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Whichever one you meant, your statement suggests either that the other one may be set too low, or that something is attenuating your audio signal from the sound card to the radio. You can see the K3's Line In level adjustment by setting MIC SEL to Line In and tapping the SPEED/MIC control twice. If it is very low (e.g. LINE 0 or LINE 1), try turning it up while backing off on the sound card level control until you achieve the required 4-5 bars of ALC reading on the K3 without having to crank either control all the way to the right. If, on the other hand, the K3's Line In level is very high (say, above 30), then it is likely that either your sound card level is set too low or you have some kind of attenuation in the signal path between the sound card and the radio. For example, you should not have an attenuator in the signal path that was designed to reduce the sound card's Line Out level to a level suitable for a microphone input; that is neither necessary nor desirable when you are using the radio's Line In input. 73, Rich VE3KI ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
