Planning on getting a K3 around the end of the month. Recently sold an Icom '756 Pro that I used with my MacBook Air to run MacLogger DX through a Black Cat CI-V. Also ran CocoaModem through a Tigertronics SignalLink USB. Selling the CI-V on eBay right now.
My question is, what'll I need to use MacLoggerDX and CocoaModem with the K3? I figure I'll need to replace the Icom cable on the SL-USB for CocoaModem, right? What about a connection for MacLoggerDX? Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I'd like to get whatever necessary before I get the K3. Thanks, Jim / W6JHB |

You will need to get a USB-to-serial adapter for rig control. If you already have a SignaLink USB, its sound card will work fine with the transmit and receive audio jacks to the Line Input and Line Output jacks of the K3. I would leave the sound activated PTT from the SignaLink USB disconnected and use the VOX PTT that is already built into the K3 instead. 73 Chen, W7AY ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
I have that same configuration...
1. Apple iMac-24 computer running current Snow Leopard. 2. MacLoggerDX 3. Elecraft K3 4. Signalink-USB 5. CocoaModem 6. And, the Prolific based USB-to-serial cable from Elecraft. It all is hooked up and works just fine including all rig control with MacLoggerDX as well as Signalink-USB for digital modes (although, I have only done PSK31 so far). The MacLoggerDX and the Signalink-USB though are completely independent of each other in my configuration. They each have their own USB cables to the Mac computer. I am still using the PTT feature of the Signalink USB but in a week or so when I get some quality time I will experiment with the K3 VOX just for the heck of it. By the way, even though the MacLoggerDX is hooked up and rig control works great, I still do not use it on a regular basis. I keep forgetting it is there and do things the old fashioned way. The nice thing about using something like PSK and CocoaModem (and probably true of other digital interfaces and software) is that you can park your VFO on the band (e.g. 14070.15) and never change it and operate digital all day long without touching the K3 or even touching a rig control application. Interacting with CocoaModem is all that is needed so rig control is just not that important to me. 73, phil, K7PEH P.S. And, thanks to Chen for helping me get into PSK and get everything working correctly. Yes you will need a different cable for the SL-USB to K3. I'm not aware of one available commercially, but it's not hard to make one. I recommend cannibalizing an old twisted pair Ethernet cable. That and a few connectors (for line in, line out, and PTT on the K3), and you'll be set. Just remember to match your wiring to the SL's internal jumpers (or vice versa). I prefer to use the SL's hardware PTT wired into the K3, rather than VOX, but it's a matter of preference. Either works fine. For the MLDX you'll need a serial port in the form of a USB-to-serial adapter. These have been discussed to death on this reflector, so scan the archives and you'll get plenty of input on that.
