K3 Dual Watch

Bill McDowell
All the chatter about the Dual Watch feature of the KX3 begs the question: Is it possible to be implemented on a single receiver K3?  Have the same 15khz limitation and maybe a menu option using the REV button to implement.

This feature, if feasible, would be high on my wish list!

More job security for Wayne I know, but would others find this useful?

What would be gained? The K3 already has a superset of all features offered
by the KX3's dual watch.

Bill,

The short answer is, "No, sorry, completely different receiver
architecture."

The ability to listen to two different frequencies without spending $700
on the second receiver would be one obvious answer to this question. ;)

Looking at the K3 block diagram in the introduction of Fred Cady's K3 Guide, the key difference in architecture here appears to be that the K3 is a dual conversion, whereas the KX3 is direct conversion. However, if you put a wide-band roofing filter (eg. KFL3B-FM 13kHz) between the first and second mixer, then perhaps it might be possible? Or are there some other considerations at play here?

Right, my previous comment was incorrect. I have the K3 with 2 receivers
and I was thinking only about it. The single-rx version won't do dual
watch. Sorry.

Ahh ... but "dual-watch" used to be the rule of the game.  Early
wireless receivers could easily listen to two signals.  In fact, they
listened to *all* of them, whether they wanted to or not.

Things are a bit better today.

We need a definition of "dual watch".

As instituted in most 'I' brand radios, it is useless, IMHO, because it it
not possible to tell which signal is on which frequency.

Some 'E' brand and 'Y' brand radios allow one to hear a different frequency
in each ear (or speaker), which is really the only way to tell who's where.

I have no plans for a KX3 and have not read the manual, so I don't know how
"dual watch" works in that radio.

Sure it is.  Just use the BALance control to pan the audio from MAIN to SUB
vfo. (Full CCW = Main only, Full CW = SUB only)
