K3 ESSB Capabilities

N8XPQ
Is the new K3 ESSB capable? If so what would be the bandwidth specs and
filters needed to make it possible?

Mike,

This is addressed in the FAQ.

ESSB is possible using the AM 6 kHz filter for
transmitting in SSB.  The firmware would then limit the BW
to about 3.5 kHz.

73 and Thanks!

It'll run ESSB with the optional 6 kHz filter.

See

For more details.

Actually you could do ESSB at even wider bandwidths, say up to 4.5 or
even 5 kHz, but the exact specs are TBD.

tnx

Is Wide SSB really necessary and is it even legal?

I for one would like to see SSB limited to no more than 2.7Khz in
firmware perhaps also with a low cut at around 150Hz

You might find this web page very informative:

http://www.nu9n.com/essb.html

About bandwidth, Part 97 does not specify any specific maximum bandwidth.
That's something causing a lot of debate right now for all modes. In
practice, emissions approaching 6 kHz are normal in the voice segments of
the band for those using AM rigs.
