Testing my transverter on 2m FM with the K3 reading 10m frequencies temporarily, due to the problem mentioned in my other post, I have noticed a couple of issues.
I would have expected that the RF/SQL front panel control could be used as a squelch control in FM mode (that's presumably what SQL stands for.) But it appears to control RF gain, just as in other modes. The only squelch control appears to be SQ MAIN in the CONFIG menu. Have I missed something? Compression, though it works with AM in this version of the firmware, still does not work with FM. Is there any reason for this?

To add speech compression to FM would require routines at AF. 73, Lyle KK7P ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
When is this likely to be available, Lyle? At the moment, I'm getting complaints about weak audio.

For now, please be sure deviation is adequate and adjust the Tx EQ. Audio-based Tx compression is low priority at the moment. 73, Lyle KK7P ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Would compression really sound OK on FM?? Having the compressor on using a IC706 on FM was horrible for audio. I remember a discussion about this some time ago and a question of if there was really 5 khz deviation. I use my K3 on 6m FM and havn't had any complaints. Limiting is normally used on FM, rather than compression. Basically the audio peaks are clipped, followed by a steep low pass filter that eliminates the harmonics. It's just a way to keep the talk power up. Over here, unfortunately, we have adopted a 12.5KHz channeling which means that the maximum deviation you can use is about 4KHz. Some repeaters will cut you off if you use any more than that. So some way of boosting the average talk power is really necessary. Because of the low deviation I find FM a really hard mode to copy these days. The only people with decent audio are those with old rigs with the deviation still set up for 25KHz channeling.

Hi Julian,
In CONFIG:SQ MAIN, turn VFO A clockwise until the display says =SUB POT. Then the front panel control will work to set the squelch level. 73 -- Joe KB8AP On Feb 25, 2009, at 6:43 AM, Julian, G4ILO wrote: > > Testing my transverter on 2m FM with the K3 reading 10m frequencies > temporarily, due to the problem mentioned in my other post, I have > noticed a > couple of issues. > > I would have expected that the RF/SQL front panel control could be > used as a > squelch control in FM mode (that's presumably what SQL stands for.) > But it > appears to control RF gain, just as in other modes. Another issue. I can't access any 2m repeater whose output is higher than 145.700. The K3 appears to think I am trying to operate out of band. There appear to be two errors of logic here. First of all, I'm in the two metre band, the dial is showing 145.775, so the band limits for the 10m IF should not apply. Second, the input frequency is 600KHz lower, so I wouldn't be *transmitting* out of band anyway.

That looks like that would affect all UK licencees :-(
