I loaded the beta firmware 3.23 mainly to get the 10 Hz tuning on the pass
band. It is very smooth and really moves the K3 up another notch on the way to perfection. OK, I guess I'm letting the mojo get to me. ;-) I read a post a couple of days before I loaded 3.23 saying that the pass band tuning made "popping" noises at each 10 Hz. I don't hear anything like that in both my K3s.just nice smooth band passing as it should be. (My K3s do not have the sub receiver and I've only played with it on CW, if that makes any difference). I also tried Wayne's suggestion of using the NR with the 10 Hz pass band and 250 Hz filter to approximate competitive rig's "peaking" feature, but I have not found that to my liking. I'll do some more experimenting this weekend in the NAQP contest to see if I can find an advantage to it. 10 Hz tuning - fantastic!!!! I have been waiting for stepping less than 50
Hz. Last night I was working PSK and the signal was fading bad and even when it was up it was S1 !!!. I was getting some dropout and realized it may be because strong signals close on the band. I cranked the width down and the shift until I only had his signal on the waterfall. I continued to have an excellant QSO and had even forgotten about the fading until he asked how I was copying and when I looked sometimes there were NO bars on the S meter. I had perfect copy. After the qso I looked and I had turned it down to 100 Hz (using my 250 filter). I had previously had trouble before getting it that narrow and having the signal in the center of the 50 Hz steps but NOW with the 10 Hz tuning I sould be able to uee it regularly. THANKS again guys. Nowhere else can somebody buy a reaio that continues to improve after they buy it and include features being requested by users AFTER they bought it! 73, de Jim KG0KP ----- Original Message ----- From: "K5WA" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Thursday, July 30, 2009 12:18 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Firmware 3.23 is very nice! >I loaded the beta firmware 3.23 mainly to get the 10 Hz tuning on the pass > band. I can only find 3.19 on the Beta folder on the FTP site. 73 -- David G4DMP Leeds, England, UK ------ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
David
I expect it's pre-beta, out with a selected test group. I expect the rest of us will see it in a few days time. 10 hz PBT granularity will be very welcome. This is one of the three basic items I've really
missed in using the K3. The other two are independent volume controls for Sidetone and Spot and the ability to hear VFO A in both ears and VFO B in one ear. I believe they are on the list and it's just a matter of being patient. What a great rig and great company! This would never have been noticed because with 50 hz shift, the mind cannot connect the before and after sound of the shift. ...but with 10 Hz, and the change not damped by an analog circuit, one can hear the very sharp 8 db drop of a signal due to a 10 Hz change of position on the steep skirt, and for that matter, hear why a lot of us have been yearning after this improvement. Using the "250" 8 pole filter set for 350 in the filter setup, and IF dsp skirts at 350 to synchronize skirts, you get to listen to a 10 Hz change drop a signal 8 db. This is a HUGE advantage for dropping a signal right at the edge of your passband in a contest. Big difference between .57 .58, .59, and .60 as seen in this partial chart on a steady test signal. Shift Dbv .45 0.1 .57 -14.5 .58 -22.4 .59 -30.9 .60 -37.1 (encountering test signal noise) Way to go Wayne! 73, Guy. ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
