K3 Firmware Bug

Hi All,

 

I'm new to this list and apologize if this has come up before. I just
assembled my new K3 (#1217, firmware 2.11, DSP firmware 1.81) and noticed a
bug in the filter selection routine.

 

I have filters in FL2 (2.7 KHz), FL3 (1.8 KHz), and FL4 (0.4 KHz).  (I'm
saving the FL1 slot for an eventual AM 6 kHz filter.) Sometimes, in SSB
mode, the K3 will try to select the K1 filter (which is turned off) at
bandbass settings above 2.7 kHz, making the receiver go dead. At other
times, it (correctly) keeps the FL2 filter activated as I widen the DSP
bandwidth and seems to know not to select the FL1 filter. If it's
erroneously trying to select FL1 as I widen the bandpass, I can enter and
then exit the CONFIG mode, and then it will start working right. I haven't
explored this problem fullly, but it's clear the automatic filter selection
subroutine isn't working properly.

 

I'm finding that the K3 is a neat transceiver, with lot's of cool features.
The assembly went smoothly (it's amazing how all the holes line up
perfectly), though I found a few errors in the manual and errata sheets.

I thought you had to have a filter in FL1?  I don't know, I bought my K3
factory built and haven't even opened the case.

In our day and age it seems that Common Sense is in short supply.  If you don't have any Common Sense - get some Common Sense and use it.  If you can't find any Common Sense, ask for help from somebody who has some Common Sense.  Is Common Sense divine?

The only requirement in the instructions is that the filter width go
from widest to narrowest from FL1 to FL5. There is no requirement to
have a filter in FL1. I'm not sure about the FM filter... it MAY have to
be put in FL1. I originally had FL1 empty, and the 2.8 in FL2, 1.8 in
FL3, etc, and it worked just fine.

You don't have to have a filter in FL1 unless you want to transmit on FM,
and in that case, you need the 13 KHz FM filter in FL1.

You must set the CW and SSB transmit filter to a 2.7 or 2.8 KHz filter,
whatever slot it is in.


It's recommended that you put the filters in from widest to narrowest,
starting at FL1.  However if you have plans for an FM filter alter and an AM
filter later, you might start with the 2.7 or 2.8 KHz filter in FL3, for
example.

According to the manual, page 68:
Rule #2: You can install any filter in any slot, and can leave any
slot empty in anticipation of installing a crystal filter there later.
However, you should install the widest filter closest to FL1, the next
widest to its left, etc. Here are two examples that could each apply
to either receiver, assuming you follow the rules above:

FL1 {saved for FM filter}
FL2 6 kHz (AM)
FL3 2.8 kHz (SSB/CW/DATA)
FL4 {saved for variable-bandwidth filter}
FL5 400 Hz (CW/DATA)

No you don't. As has been pointed out, the filters do need to go from widest to narrowest. But I had an empty FL1 slot for several months while I waited for the FM filter to become available and never noticed the problem that is being reported.

One other thing to check if you haven't already solved this issue is
the FLTX parameter in the CONFIG menu:

FLTX{md}     Default:  FL1 (all modes)
Used to specify which crystal filter to use during TX. {md} =
CW/SB/AM/FM. Choose filers with bandwidths as follows: SSB, 2.7 or 2.8
kHz (also applies to data); CW, 2.7 or 2.8 kHz; AM, 6 kHz; FM, 12 kHz
or higher. Note: If you're using a 2.7-kHz 5-pole filter for SSB
transmit, you can optionally fine-tune its FLx FRQ parameter to
equalize LSB / USB transmit characteristics. Monitor your signal on a
separate receiver, using headphones.
