MCU 4.39 / DSP 2.73 July 6, 2011

* NEW AF MIXER COMBINATIONS (CONFIG:L-MIX-R): Added AB A, B BA, B B, B
A, A A. These may be useful for “SO2V” operation and various DX/
contest scenarios. ("A" refers to the main receiver, "B" to the sub.)

* KAT3 IMPROVEMENTS: T/R timing and power thresholds changed to
improve SWR measurement sensitivity.

* P3 and PC NOTIFIED ON RX ANT CHANGE: Switching RX ANT on/off now
informs the P3 and a connected PC of possible changes to the preamp
and attenuator settings. These are stored separately for the RX ANT on
and off cases.

* ADDED "SMH" COMMAND (high-resolution S-meter): This is presently
experimental; it is intended to work with W8WWV's “S-meter Lite”
program. "SMH;" responds with "SMHxxx;" where xxx is approx. 005 @
S-1, 040 @ S-9, and 100 @ S9+60. Resolution is approximately 1 dB.
NOTE: The value returned will probably be adjusted after
testing.“BG” (BAR GRAPH) REMOTE CONTROL COMMAND: Added 'R' or 'T' at
end of this command to indicate RX (S units) or TX (watts).

Where can you download a version of S-meter light that supports the K3?

I just updated my K3 with the latest firmware (4.39). The laptop I have at
the operating position does have a serial port, but I decided this was the
time to check out my latest acquisition--a 4 port serial hub I had seen
discussed here on the Elecraft reflector. see

Anyway, it worked just fine! Now I have more serial ports than I can say
grace over! One little blip though--the hub has 4 ports marked "com1, com2,
etc. When I installed them, my computer said it had opened com ports 6
though 9. So, I assumed "com port 1 on the hub would be "com port 6 on my
computer. Not so!!! It turned out that com 1 on the hub was actually com
port 8 on the computer, so they apparently don't get assigned in any order.
I wasn't expecting the numbers to match of course, but I did assume they
would be sequential.

Anyway, after I got that figured out, everything went very smoothly. As far
as I can tell at this point, these 4 port USB/serial hubs are pretty good.
Anyone looking for a USB/Serial adapter, and needing more than one for all
your goodies, might want to check this out.

Now I'm planning on trying to hook up my old Icom PCR-1000 to the hub and
see if it really does give me multiple ports. Don't see why it shouldn't.

The version I found is from 2007 and just has Icom and Yaseu settings. I would to try this so if anyone figures it out please post how you did it.

Thanks for this nice feature. This is a great add-on for contesting. Are
those combinations accessible via a command?
If so we can write a macro and can switch audio via the keyboard.

Second, is there any thoughts for a fix level audio out?
This will make nice recording of a qso.
This depends now on the monitor level settings.

control macros.

It's already present as the default:
Select LIN OUT, tap 1 to toggle from =PHONES to NOR, then set
the line out level (default is 10)

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough, but I was referring to the TX audio
This part is still controlled by the TX monitor settings
If there is no monitor audio,(set CCW) there is no audio at the output
I will be nice if the TX audio level can be set fixed

I would also find this useful. I frequently use the K3 LINE OUT for recording both sides of a CW QSO and for using the CW sidetone alone to drive "iCW" (the AA0HW Internet CW system that works very well for those without home stations so they still have the capability of running some QRQ CW).

When recording qso's, if I adjust MON so the sidetone level going to the sound card matches the received signal level in LINE OUT, then the sidetone in my headphones is too loud. As a result I have to get by with a "weak" sidetone in the recording.

The settings of course are dependent on the characteristics of the sound card in use. With my current sound card, I have to turn the LINE setting far higher than the default setting of 10 to produce a reasonable level. My previous computer had a higher sensitivity sound card so levels were more reasonable.

If the sidetone level to the LINE OUT could be separately adjusted to match the received audio level in the LINE OUT path, while the actual sidetone to the headphonse (or speakers) is still adjusted by MON, it would be very handy. No big deal, just one more convience added to the K3.

As it is, the LINE OUT quality in my K3 setup is still far higher than any previous rigs, none of which even provided the sidetone in the LINE OUT, only loud thumps. The K3 LINE OUT is clean as a whistle.
