Re: K3 HRD Ver 6

Chris Schrecengost
I downloaded it last night and they had problems with their key server so
it was quite late before I could even run it. I have a KX3 and it didn't
seem any different at all for the tiny bit of time I got to use it.

Re: K3 HRD Ver 6

Rick WA6NHC
Additional support for the K3 will not appear until the 6.X version due next
year.  This goes for other radios too.  They follow my axiom of "make it
work, then make it pretty".  For now, it works (v6 too) and since they've
been given a K3 to improve the HRD interface, I expect great things.

Merry Christmas,
Rick wa6nhc

PS The upgrade went very smoothly, but I had extra copies of the log, just
in case.

Re: K3 HRD Ver 6

Chris Schrecengost
Well, I found a bit of a problem. The log/QRZ lookup function isn't working
correctly. I'm on 80m right now with DM780 and every callsign it checks
with QRZ is marked that I've worked it on 80m PSK31. That's rather
impossible since I've never worked 80m PSK31 at all before getting the KX3
two weeks ago.

The website says they use Mantis for bug reports. I registered with it and
tried to submit a report but it doesn't have any "projects" in it and won't
allow a report submission without a project selected. Since I couldn't do
that, I entered a regular support ticket instead.

In reply to this post by Rick WA6NHC
Well, I guess there is little need for me to worry about V6 for now. I
was afraid this would be the case. The V5.0 works fair with the K3 -
limited for buttons and sliders and unreliable button indicators.

Thanks for the update.

I gave up on HRD when it was supposedly coming out in AUG or so and didn't. (4+ mths late)

Been running with DXsuite with KX3 and works like a charm. Great support, and no sarcasm in the owners post.

And I do not have any financial invested as it is a free product

Re: K3 HRD Ver 6

DXsuite is a good product, and HRD is also a very good product.  I do
not object to paying the authors a sum of money to keep food on the
table for their family.  That is -- if I will actually use the product.

Personal situation applies - I no longer use HRD in my normal operating,
I use it only at the workbench to test the K2 serial port connection
capability.  It either connects or does not, and if it does not, I need
to search for the problem.

At the operating position, I use Fldigi and while that does not have all
the bells and whistles of HRD v6.x, it does the job for me.

What I am saying is - look for the value of advanced function for your
own particular situation when choosing between various applications.
Some may work to your advantage, and others may not fulfill all your
needs.  Put you money on those which enhance your operating experience.

If the information I have 'from the grapevine'. HRD will become an
awesome product, especially for those who operate digital modes as well
as other modes.  Yes, that opinion is based on promises rather than
personal experiences - HRD promises to be well integrated with the K3
and KX3, but from the reports I am seeing on the reflector, it has made
progress, but is "not there yet"

I am happy with it. Surely a beta no doubt. There are some new features that I am already enamored with such as QSL card label printing and some specific logbook features that make DXing more efficient for me. Other products may have similar offerings but I am cool with this one for now.

There are some bugs in dm780 but I hopeful the HRD team will get them fixed. I have enjoying using their PSK and RTTY programs which are really good for me though their older CW offering is not good.

The good thing is that there are many options to choose from and switching costs are pretty low overall. I am pleased so far with the beta and am looking forward to the newer HRD v6 when it goes prime time early next year.

I use HRD with version 5.x right now and love the integration of the CAT
control, Digitol and Log book.   I have no problems with the software and it
does everything that I want to do.   I use it everyday and have purchased
the the 6.0 version and have been waiting for a long time for it.

However going thru the progression of the free versions of how they have
fixed bugs that I see signficant improvement.   Right now they have released
a beta version of software similar to how Elecraft does as they need to get
a larger test base to improve the product.  I will be installing the beta
version after I read more info on the HRD forum and reflector as I tend to
wait a few days for dust to settle for any beta release.

There are many options out there for HAM software so do your research and
try them and have fun.

Merry Christmas!
