K3 Hardware Updates

Phil Salas
Well I finally bit the bullet and did the audio- and ALC-mod hardware
updates to my SN308 K3, including adding pull-ups to the band-data outputs
(optional mod in the ALC instructions).  I'd already done the HAGC and CW
rise-time mod a few months ago.  While I don't use ALC with my K3/ALS-600, I
wanted everything up to date.  Everything went smoothly, as the Elecraft
instructions are excellant.  Time spent was probably about two hours, but I
took my time.

I wanted to pass on my experience with K6LL's suggestion about making the L4
front panel mod from the side of the unit without having to remove the front
panel.  I found this surprisingly easy to do, and it certainly saved time.

So - Now after two mod processes plus installation of the KRX3, my cabinet
screws are starting to show a little wear.  Maybe Elecraft should offer a
small kit that just includes replacement cabinet screws (top-and side-cover
especially) for those of us who keep taking our K3s apart.

I believe both the Pan Head and Flat Head chassis screws are already set up on the "Spare Parts and Mod Kits" page under "Miscellaneous", but you may want to confirm with Elecraft first:

CHSCRKT
Chassis Screws, Black, 4-40 x 3/16  Pan Head (qty 20 per package)
        2.00

FLTSCRKT Flat Head Undercut 4-40 chassis screws
Used on the K1 (qty 10 per package)
        1.00

If you build additional units, you'll soon have a collection of spares!

I tried to FTP the the above updates, but it looks like one can't
download the screw packages and install them with the K3 Utility.

Now that really would be a software defined radio. ;-)

K3 #67 has been transported and apart so often, that it looks bit wizen.

My unit, s/n 00002, has been apart more than together.  I find careful
use of a black "sharpie" hides screw wear pretty well!

Getting ready for the "Blizzard of '08" later today,

Of course with KWAYNE22 or KERIC22 options it will fade to a hologram of
Wayne or Eric, who would then say "Finished installing automatic
updates..." Special customers also have a choice of the KLISA22 or any
other Elecraft fave they might have.   ;-)

For the not so faint of heart, a third party will offer a KCATCH22 add on...

Although a little screw wear is inevitable, the wear will be much less
if a proper fitting screwdriver is used.  The screwdriver points do wear
after a while, so the purchase of a good new #1 phillips screwdriver is
my recommendation.  When the screwdriver point will no longer hold a
screw securely, I believe it is time to purchase a new one.  A good
screwdriver point will hold a new chassis screw when the shaft is more
than 15 degrees off a vertical position (who needs a screwholder or
magnetic screwdriver if the tip is good?).
I have found Excelite screwdrivers in general are good, and I have also
found good ones at Ace Hardware.

Re: K3 Hardware Updates...TNX for hint

Thanks to the G;  whomever it was,,, for the hint on the removal of the choke
( audio output mod).

That was to turn the set upside down ... use my fantastic solder
sucker,,,,then drop the old part into the set . This rather than
having to remove the 2ndRX to get to that choke.

Then put the new part on the bottom. ... a 10 minute job.

(yes I remembered to get the old part out.) It actually fell out on the table.

I like the German-made tools from Wiha and Wera. I ordered a set of Wiha screwdrivers in a canvas pouch from chadstoolbox.com but they arrived too late for the K3 build.
