My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the intuitively
logical controls - but I'm trying to figure out what part I need if any to connect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. I see a larger stereo plug coming from the PTT switch & a small one coming from the heaset (1 wire), which currently go to a Yaesu adapter to my old rig. The other two wires to the headset appear to be for the earphones (small stereo plug). Can I use "PTT IN", "STEREO PHONES" & "MIC" on the back & just ignore the 8-pin connector on the front? Sorry if it is a dumb question. 73 Kate K6HTN ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
Yes, you can do it all from the back panel and ignore the 8-pin Foster
connector on the front panel. You'll need something to bridge the 1/4" phone plug on the Heil hand trigger to an RCA plug for PTT. Not a dumb question. I sometimes prefer the front panel headphone jack because I like pulling the plug out and having the speaker come on. There are menu ways of doing this, but I'm old fashioned. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Kate Hutton Sent: Sunday, March 20, 2011 9:50 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the intuitively logical controls - but I'm trying to figure out what part I need if any to connect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. I got a 1/4" plug and a little red pushbutton momentary-contact switch (total cost at Gateway Electronics, 3 bucks). The switch is round and has the same diameter as the plug housing. Sawed about 1/2" off the top of the plug housing , wired the switch to do PTT, epoxied it in line with the housing, and shrank some heat-shrink tubing over the joint. It looks like a professional piece of gear and fits one's hand perfectly. 73, Tony KT0NY ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hi, Kate.
You have two choices for this. One, as you have already figured, plug the mic into the MIC on the back, Phones into the PHONES on the back, and get an adapter to adapt the 1/4 inch PTT plug on the headset to the RCA plug on the back of the K3. The other approach is to get a Kenwood headset adapter from Heil, and use it with the front panel 8-pin connector, and the phones jack on the front panel (with maybe the appropriate adapter 1/8 stereo to 1/4 inch stereo). Note that K3 headphones AND speaker out is STEREO. Do NOT plug a MONO plug into the SPEAKER OUT jack on the rear of the K3. Don't ask me how I know this. FYI: The K3 is designed to accommodate a built-in Sub-Receiver and normally places main receiver audio mostly in the left ear. And, when you add the second receiver, you hear the audio in the right ear. Works very well. I hope you enjoy your K3 as much as I've enjoyed mine. Good luck.... ,.,.,bill nr4c On Sun, 20 Mar 2011 21:49:54 -0700, Kate Hutton wrote: > My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the > intuitively > logical controls - but I'm trying to figure out what part I need if > any to > connect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. Or use VOX instead of PTT - with the Proset, that works extremely well.

I have your set up and ask Heil this is there reply from Bob Heil "You will need the AD-1 K for the K3 (same pin out as Kenwood). The headphones are stereo and will work for dual reception PLU they have our exclusive Phase Reversal. Great match for the K3" 73 Larry K1ZW -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Kate Hutton Sent: Monday, March 21, 2011 12:50 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the intuitively logical controls - but I'm trying to figure out what part I need if any to connect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. I'm using my old Pro Set iC (it is an electret, so I switch on power to it) which works great with the K3. Use a foot switch into the back. I sold the Heil iC adaptor since the mic plugs into the back panel and I use a 1/4" to miniature adaptor on the front for the headphones. I also use a Heil desk mike for casual operating (another electret element), and it plugs into the front panel mic jack and I use the K3 setup to switch between front and rear mic. 73 de, W3OU Steve -----Original Message----- From: Kate Hutton <[hidden email]> To: [hidden email] Sent: Mon, Mar 21, 2011 12:49 am Subject: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset My new K3 works great on CW - love the way it sounds & the intuitively ogical controls - but I'm trying to figure out what part I need if any to onnect my Heil Pro headset, with a PTT hand trigger. I use the proset plus w/ K3. Work´s really great (better for dx w/ the hc-4
on) Also w/ the SUB on i can hear both qrg´s one on each ear - perfect !!! Of course w/ the SUB RX installed. It goes directly to the back of the rig. I gotta the kenwood adpater just in case ( if i want to plug the headset on the front). 73´s and GL de PY2ADR / ZY2C ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sfbonk" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]>; <[hidden email]> Sent: Monday, March 21, 2011 10:50 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 & Heil headset > > I'm using my old Pro Set iC (it is an electret, so I switch on power to > it) which works great with the K3. This is only if you feel the need to have PTT with the hand trigger. I
stick with VOX and just plug everything in to the back connectors. Really neat and avoids the front clutter. K3 vox is great. Another option might be to use a foot switch.
