I'm considering adding a K9AY antenna for 160m and 80m. For those of you
who are using one with the K3 do you find the K3 preamp sufficient or is another preamp required? My K9AY would be no more than 100ft of coax away so I wouldn't expect a lot of additional loss. Unless you live in a very quiet area, you won't need a preamp, Jim. My K9AY is smaller than average and even with its lower sensitivity I have never needed an external preamp. In fact, I normally have the K3 internal preamp OFF on 80 and 160. Even use the attenuator or back off the RF gain sometimes.

Jim,
My experience is the same as Craig's. I have an ICE and also an Array Solutions Preamp. Neither is ever used. When using the K9AY on TB, the K3 Preamp is normally off. During a contest the attenuator might even be turned on. Similarly I have found no need for an external preamp when using Beverage antennas. Previously I used a five foot square magnetic loop receiving antenna and for it, the preamp in my then Orion II was used. I think you will like the K9AY, it is not a Beverage but it is a very useful antenna. Good Luck. 73 Doug EI2CN -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Craig Smith Sent: 18 November 2011 04:51 To: Jim Miller Cc: Elecraft Reflector Subject: Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 preamp sufficient for K9AY? The K3 preamp will be more than adequate, Jim. I made an rx loop based on
G3LNP's refinement of the K9AY (see Oct 2010 QST) and find that no external preamp is needed. 73 to all Geoff G3UCK -----Original Message----- From: Jim Miller I'm considering adding a K9AY antenna for 160m and 80m. Responses have been unanimous that a supplemental preamp beyond the
internal K3 one is unnecessary. Thanks all! Try unplugging and replugging the antenna from the receiver,
if you notice an increase in noise you do not need to further amplify the signal. A further amplification worsens the dynamic of the receiver. Only if you're lucky and live in a little noisy QTH you need a preamplifier at K9AY antenna or if you have a high lossy coax between the antenna and the receiver. 73, Fausto IK4NMF ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jim Miller" <[hidden email]> To: "Elecraft Reflector" <[hidden email]> Sent: Friday, November 18, 2011 2:29 AM Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 preamp sufficient for K9AY? > I'm considering adding a K9AY antenna for 160m and 80m.
