K3 Line-In for PSK31 not working

Alan D. Wilcox, W3DVX
Hello,

Setting up the K3 with PC and have audio coming out of sound card.
Testing with DigiPan and tx audio connected to K3's Line-In isn't
working. Yes, I set the main-menu to "Line-In" ... but nil, regardless
of how high I set the audio sliders for the sound card. Even tried a
mono plug.

The microphone input works with the same cableset after changing to the
mic jack and changing the main-menu. Might be tempted to use that, but
it's too sensitive and tends to hum.

Something special I need to do to get the Line-In jack to work?

There were some problems with setting  "Line in" that have been cleared up with the last two firmware releases. The audio data modes now seem to work well, so I would ask the obvious questions:

Do you have the latest firmware?
Is mode set to "data"?
Is data mode set to "data A"?

With my computer audio output at a 50% setting a low K3 "Line IN" level of 3 to 5 is sufficient.

Re: K3 Line-In for PSK31 not working

Bob,
Think it was a simple matter of not adjusting the front panel MIC gain
up when I went to Line-In setting. That's working, but the hassle continues.

Yes, I've got the latest 1.58, 1.48. At the moment I'm doing USB rather
than data mode. I tried your suggestion for data mode with dataA, and it
works the same also.

I was going to use VOX instead of a physical PTT, but that doesn't work
well. I've adjusted gains but it insists on cycling on & off. Thought
anti-VOX would fix, but it doesn't.

So I tried manual PTT with front panel button to transmit ... getting
feedback somehow when I put the mic gain up to about 4 for even just 1
bar ALC. Have power set to 5 watts.

I don't use VOX so I can't comment on it. I use Ham Radio Deluxe which is integrated with PSK31 Deluxe and the new DM780 multimode digital software. MMTTY also has a "bridge" program tying it to HRD. With any of these, when you hit "send" in the software it automatically keys transmit by a serial command sent by HRD. No muss, no fuss, no extra wires, no VOX settings.

Please check your cable and verify it is firmly seated into the K3 LINE
IN connector.  I routinely use LINE IN with VOX in DATA A mode to
operate PSK31 on my K3 with no problems.

Set your soundcard volume to about 50%

Connect soundcard output to the K3 LINE IN.

Connect the souncard input to the K3 LINE OUT.

Set Menu item MIC SEL to LINE IN.

Set mode to DATA.  HOLD DATA MD to choose Data-A.

Set power to ~20W (just something to start with).

Use the MIC control to set the drive level so that your output is equal or just below what
you dialed in (20W in this case).  CMP is locked at zero.

When setup this way I get excellent PSK31 results with TX IMD at ~ -34 dB.

FOR PTT

You can use a seperate line for PTT to the ACCY connector or the RCA PTT connection on the
back of the K3.  You can also use the RS-232 serial connection if your software allows you
to set it up that way.

Set PTT-Key to either RTS - OFF or DTR - OFF in the CONFIG menu.  Then in your software set
PTT to either DTR or RTS as appropriate to the same COM port the radio is connected to.
Note not all software allows you to do this.  Depending on the software you can also try
PTT via CAT command (this works in MixW).

Hope this helps.

Bob,
Ah! Now THAT'S a great idea. I didn't realize HRD + DM780 did the PTT
like that. I tried it out and it worked perfectly. (I really like
DigiPan, but I can do that with my K2+RigBlaster.)

I'm still trying to get the K3 to work remotely. See
http://forums.ham-radio.ch/showthread.php?p=54512#post54512 for a thread
relating to IP-Sound and HRD and DM780.

FWIW, if anyone reading is trying to setup their K3 (or whatever)
remotely, I've found UltraVNC ideal to allow me to tinker with both ends
without having to go physically back and forth quite so much. I'm secure
behind my firewall, but if I had to go outside, I'd want to tunnel my
VNC session inside a (secure) ssh connection.

If you are not using VOX, then you must be using a serial or parallel
cable?

I use Ham Radio Deluxe for general rig control using the standard serial cable to the K3's RS232 port. The digital programs interface to HRD, which automatically sends a transmit command to the rig. This is totally transparent to the operator. Hit send in MMTTY or PSK31 Deluxe or DM780 and RF happens.

BTW - DM780 handles many modes, including keyboard CW and CW decode. Keyboard CW is handled in exactly the same fashion as PSK, QPSK,  MCW, DominoEx, MFSK, MT63, Olivia, RTTY and Throb.

BTW2 - Simon Brown, HRD's developer,  is a K3 owner. The recent beta software already has good support and I think well see great support in the future.

Yes, you need some way of kicking the K3 into PTT if you're not using VOX.

Most people buy or build an interface like a rigblaster which does the
switching chore and isolates the computer from the rig. I believe the K3
doesn't need the "interface" just some extracurricular wiring between
the K3's data, isolated sound ports, and the personal confuser.

My program, KCommunicate, does the same thing. I would have thought most programs could do that if you enable the "CAT" option. I think MixW does.

But with the K3, you don't need any level shifting transistor switch to do PTT, just a straight through cable, so if you've got the serial connection (unless it's just a 3 wire cable) either method should work.

I wish the mic selection could be linked to modes though: Line In for data, Front Panel for voice, or whatever.

By the way, how do you adjust the input level? I can turn it up until I get 5W and then add some more, but I don't see any ALC reading. With the K2, I set the level so 1 bar of ALC was showing.

A good idea - also the ability to use more than one audio input at the
same time is needed, e.g. the line in for an external voice keyer and
one of the microphone inputs for the headset.

I keep asking dor this too and it keeps not happening.

As a workaround I used PF XIT to take you to MIC SEL.  PF RIT I send to
SPKR+PH so there's some symmetry that helps me remember.

These things do not happen overnight and have to be prioritized.  Mic + Line is already done in DSP
but still needs to be put in the MCU code.  Having Line In default for Data mode is also on the list
already.  Please be patient...these features will happen.
