My official hi to the group,
I just placed my order for a K3 today so the gears are in motion. Anyone using Logic 8 with the K3? It looks like Logic is set up for the K2 but I didn't see anything for the K3. Or are the commands the same for both K2 & K3? Thanks! I use Logic 8 with my K3. Choose the K2 setting, but it works fine. Reads
radio data as you log and allows some rig control from the program too. I don't do anything fancy with it, but it seems fine for the basic operations. Logic 8 also has contest log forms for many contests. I used the SS form for the SSB contest recently. There's a problem when clicking on spots in Logic 8. I often find it
necessary to click the spot two times. The first time sets the freq OK but it does not always set the mode. Clicking a spot a second time sets the mode. I've tried to work with Dennis on this and he made an attempt but it did not fix the problem and he did not want to persue it further. I was pretty disappointed. 73 Greg AB7R -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]]On Behalf Of Phil and Christina Sent: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 6:57 PM To: [hidden email]; [hidden email] Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K3 & Logic 8 I use Logic 8 with my K3. Hi Phil & Greg
That it works with the K3 is a good thing, I have been using one incarnation of Logic or the other since Logic 2. For the most part what I want is to be able to log automatically with the band & mode. If it didn't work, I'd have to look around for a different software and hope it would successfully import my Logic data into it. Logic uses FoxPro still and I've not found FoxPro to be very user friendly and to me it has always seemed quirky if not buggy. Dennis seems to be happy to continue to program with FoxPro and I suspect the issue is more with FoxPros limitations. Dennis can be quite self directed at times. I suspect if he had a K3 to work with he would make the necessary changes to permit the whole suite of options Logic contains to efficiently work with the K3. I suppose without his having a K3 to do command testing with, he is just guessing and doesn't want to waste his time or some such. He is indeed a perfectionist with all the grief that sometimes entails. A side note; one thing I've come to understand, the guy has integrity & walks the walk. His Sabbath is on Saturday and he had an indoor booth at Dayton. He closed down all of Saturday because he refused to work on that day, no matter how that impacted his sales. Since there appears to be some issue with the spotting functions, I suspect he wants to do the right thing with the K3 & Logic interface. If nobody sends one to him to work with, maybe once I get my K3 I will send mine to him to play with for a week or so & I'll use my trusty Corsair II during the down time. That's probably what he'll need to get the issues worked out. Thanks for the replies, Gary KA1J > There's a problem when clicking on spots in Logic 8. Greg, > I've tried to work with Dennis on this and he made an attempt > but it did not fix the problem and he did not want to persue > it further. I was pretty disappointed. I suspect Logic is another of those logging programs that send the mode before the frequency. I suppose I'll dig out a copy and the serial port monitor one of these evenings to confirm that. Perhaps I'll even run through all of the logging programs that I have for support purposes and document those that will have problems with the K3 (known issues: DXBase, DX4Win, AClog and Win-EQF so far). 73, ... I wonder if this common issue could be resolved by having an option to make the mode command work per VFO (all bands) rather than per VFO per band? Another possible solution is that if the band change is made using a software command rather than a front panel button press, the K3 could simply leave the mode as it is already set. It is not always enough just to send the mode command after the frequency command because you have to fight the K3's intention to switch to the mode you last used on the selected band. So the software has to change the frequency, wait a fraction of a second for the K3 to do its mode change, and then change the mode to what the software wants. It probably is expecting too much of software developers to add this specific support for the K3, if no other radio has the problem.

You might wish to advise the author that the 'double click to set mode
issue' is because the mode is being set before the frequency. Some OLD kenwoods required it this way around but with a modern radio that remembers mode on a per band basis this now makes little sense what needs to be done for k2 K3 (and probably some of the newer kenwoods too..) is to set the mode AFTER the frequency so that the mode is being set on the new band, not the old one. I don't use logic 8 but if the author is unclear on what is needed I would be happy to help if he gets in touch. I did the K2 and k3 support in Dxbase and Omni-rig 73 Brendan EI6IZ On Tue, 2008-11-25 at 22:33 -0500, Gary Smith wrote: > Hi Phil & Greg > > That it works with the K3 is a good thing, I have been using one > incarnation of Logic or the other since Logic 2. Dxbase as shipped has k2 support that does this in the right order for
the k2/k3 and all of the rig control features of Dxbase work correctly with the K2/K3. With DXbase 2007 there are no known issues with the k2/k3 I have a k3 file done for it too, at the moment it's only a cosmetic rewrite of the k2 file since the k2 file fully supports all DXbase features on the k3. Anyone with older versions of Dxbase can get the updated radio config files from me 73 Brendan EI6IZ On Wed, 2008-11-26 at 01:34 -0500, Joe Subich, W4TV wrote: > Greg, > > > I've tried to work with Dennis on this and he made an attempt > > but it did not fix the problem and he did not want to persue > > it further. I've been using Logic8 with decent success with the K3.
I selected the TS-850 instead of the K2. When I used the K2 selection it would not put the K3 into split mode while the TS-850 selection does. I do have a couple quirks. Sometimes I get a radio time out and I have to go to tools to reset the radio communication. I occasionally have to select set rig twice to place the rig in the correct mode. Bottom line the TS-850, in my case, is more stable and useful than using the K2 selection. For what its worth TRX Manager has been updated to support the K3 and Laurent keeps adding K3 features. TRX communicates with Logic8 as a rig. Another option is HRD (Ham Radio Deluxe), I have not used it much but theres a way to interface HRD with Logic and HRD supports the K3 very well also. But to be honest, unless I am running my remote controlled station (long story as its been off line for over a year now) I don't see why you would need or want to bother with another software program. I think other guys run HRD or TRX as they find it easier to control the rig and get to menu items, and they may be right. This is not a patch this is an entirely valid solution in all ways that the Software commands the radio. Once again I would reiterate that all Rig control features of DXbase are fully functional with the k2 and k3 the underlying program logic does not (ever) send mode without also sending frequency so this approach does not break anything at all. 73 Brendan On Wed, 2008-11-26 at 09:58 -0500, microHAM America wrote: > By default DXBase changes mode before frequency.
