K3 Microphone Choices

pastormg
Good evening.  I have a K3 and really love it.  I am looking at purchasing a new microphone pretty soon.  I am currently using a Kenwood  MC-60 and I get excellent reports on my modulation. But I have been reading alot about the Heil microphones and was wondering what Heil microphone would work good with my system.  I basically like to operate for DX though I do chat from time to time on some nets.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!!!  Mark KB3Z

By using the TX Equalizer - you can make just about any mic do what you
want - from too much bass to Tweedy Pie!

Can do that with TXEQ in the K3 and you don't waste money on another base
mic.

The MC60 can easily be made to sound the same. Bonus is it already has a
PTT lock too and no extra cable from Heil at inflated prices.

Hi Mark,

I use the Heil HM-12, and find that it works extremely well w/ the K3.
It's insensitive to room noise, and the K3's TX EQ, TX Gate, and
compression adjustments will enable you to optimize it for DX or "easy on
the ears" rag chews -- or anything in between.

If you'd like, we can set up a sked sometime and you can hear what it
sounds like for yourself.

Re: K3 Microphone Choices

Hi Mark, Hi all
Good morning from Australia, re the request
for recommendations for microphone / headset combo's. Like you I had
been using a Kenwood MC60 microphone .

I purchased a Koss SB40 headset with dynamic microphone; the mic was
very sensitive to position,
(seemed very directional and had objectional bass from proximity when
correctly positioned), eventually the R/hand driver unit went O/C with a
lead fault.

I bit the bullet & bought a Yamaha CM500, which, as standard has an
electret microphone and external battery bias box for gear not electret
compatible.

Since receiving the CM500 and using it with the K3 (S/No:4520), I am
completely satisfied with the CM500 Mic headset combination; after
setting the Mic Gain range to low & transmit equalisation with plenty of
bass cut up to 200Hz and a little treble lift above 2Khz  I have been
receiving unsolicited reports of "superb audio" from the K3 with the
CM500 headset.

I have had the headset for about 2 months & so far, it has definitely
exceeded all my expectations: sturdy construction, not heavy, good ear
pads (cover the ears well & as I wear glasses & have hearing aids) the
headset sits well over both and is OK for hours of use with no
discomfort.  By the way I do not use the hearing aids in combination
with the headset, but, at times, I have slipped the headset on to get in
to call a DX station before being swamped by other callers -or- qsy etc,
I have been suprised how comfortable the CM500 has been over both the
glasses & hearing aids.

The added bonus is that the CM500 is about 1/4 of the Heil haedset and
much better built (I have both) and the CM500 is way in front on both
counts (Price & construction).

My 2 Cents Worth.

73 from Eric VK3AX.

That's why one adds a 0.1 uF capacitor in series with the mic hot
lead in the base.   Take your time and try 0.05, 0.1 and 0.5 uF
to find one that fits your voice and the rig.  It will roll off
the excess bass and provide a rising characteristic through out
the entire voice range.

The MC-90 actually includes switch selected .22 uF and .047 uF
capacitors with 1.2K shunt across the mic line to the rig.

These techniques have been around for 40 years or more ... it
used to be a .001 uF in series with the high impedance mics to
the Collins, Drake and Heath rigs in the day.

I would not wast the money on replacing the MC-60 with a Heil.  If
you *really* want a "professional" mic, look at an ATR-30 which is
generally available for half of what a PR-20 or similar Heil "Pro"
mic.  You will not be able to tell the difference among the three
in "blind" listening tests.

Use the TX EQ - don't waste your money on another mic.

I strongly agree. It's very easy to make almost any decent mike sound
good with a K3. Many K3 users, especially those who are competitive
contesters and DXers, like the Yamaha CM500 boom headset. It's very
comfortable, even after a long weekend contesting, and both the mic and
the headphones sound VERY good. Not only that, it's very inexpensive --
about $45 delivered from vendors like B&H Photo  in NYC. You can buy
three for the price of one Heil, and it sounds better than the Heils
I've heard. The Heil mics are over-hyped and wildly overpriced.  You're
paying for Bob Heil's advertising budget, which is huge, not for his
mics, which are cheaply built and not that comfortable.

How competitive is the audio from a CM500 with a K3?  Well, as a lark, I
worked ARRL DX SSB QRP. (DX contests aren't competitive from California,
because it's very tough to work EU, which is where the mults are.) Even
running QRP, I worked a dozen EU stations in 9 countries, a total of 41
countries. Believe me, if you can work a SSB DX contest QRP, you've got
really competitive audio!  BTW -- I also worked TX5K on 80-10 (except
30, of course).

Five years ago I purchased a ATR-30 from J&R for $22.00 it came with a
16ft XLR 3 pin cable when I A/B tested against my Gold Line Heil the
only difference was the price my advice is use the EQ save you money do
not purchase the Heil.

I use a Heil PR-781 boom mic that was designed for the high end amateur
transceivers or so Bob Heil told me when I started to buy a PR-40. I thought
quite a bit of him after that because the PR-40 was double the cost of the
781, but I have always received excellent reports with it. I used it with my
FTDX-5000MP and now my 2 K3's in a SO2R setup.

Re: K3 Microphone Choices

One thing I did want to add to that post is I have mic's that have cost from
$35-550 including the Yaesu MD-200 the $400 desk mic and a couple of
professional recording ones. The PR-781 did the very best for me for several
reasons, I used it only on radios that had a full EQ for the transmit so it
could be tailored to my voice and a mic that added nothing i.e. flat as it
should be.

Plus once you go to a boom mic you will never want a desk mic again, well if
all you do is rag chew you might not. Hands free operation is great for
DX'ing and an occasional contest looking for band countries to type/write
with.

The same could be said be said about buying a loaded K3/P3 SVGA for $5500+
instead of an IC-718 for $700 both radios?

Myself I prefer a better quality of radio, mic and microHAM equipment over
Signalink. I hate to have a weak link in an otherwise good station and then
quality comes into the picture plastic vs. metal. That said I do have
several "plastic mic's in the shack 2 Elecraft/Heil headsets and 2 Elecraft
hand mic's K2/KX3.

Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten.

Five years ago I purchased a ATR-30 from J&R for $22.00 it came with a 16ft
XLR 3 pin cable when I A/B tested against my Gold Line Heil the only
difference was the price my advice is use the EQ save you money do not
purchase the Heil.

Good evening.  I have a K3 and really love it.  I am looking at purchasing a
new microphone pretty soon.  I am currently using a Kenwood  MC-60 and I get
excellent reports on my modulation. But I have been reading alot about the
Heil microphones and was wondering what Heil microphone would work good with
my system.  I basically like to operate for DX though I do chat from time to
time on some nets.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!!  Mark KB3Z

This is a case of apples vs. oranges.  There is less difference among
microphones designed for voice work than there is among high end rigs.
Yes, there are places for specialized microphones - if one is working
from a distance (e.g., a "shotgun" mic), trying to mic a "kick" drum,
or trying to duplicate the complex overtone structure of classical
strings using a microphone designed for the job is essential.

However, communications is one of the least demanding applications
for a microphone and spending $200, $300 or even $400 is not going
to provide any more performance than the $50 utility mic.  In this
area, one is paying for name and style not performance.

Re: K3 Microphone Choices

Apparently the ATR-30 has been discontinued.  The ATR-1300
seems to be the replacement even though the ATR-30 was labeled
"professional" and the ATR-1300 "consumer."  The ATR-1300 is
$18.99 at B&H Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com).

One note about any "prosumer" mic - you will need to use an external
means of T/R switching, e.g. foot switch or VOX, since those mics do
not include a PTT switch unlike "communications" microphones.

Re: Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

In reply to this post by N0AZZ

Given my experience with the Heil Pro-set with HC-4/HC-5 element vs.
the Yamaha CM-500, I'm not going to put Heil in the "quality" or
"support" camps.

If you want to compare Heil to a $5.00 "tape recorder" mic, you may
have a "quality" argument.  However, there are enough solid, well made
professional microphones in the sub-$100 class that one does not need
to spend $300 or even $200 for the Heil name.

Re: Fwd: K3 Microphone Choices

Keith Heimbold
The DX Store sells the PR781 Heil microphone for $139. Plan to add that to my portfolio of microphones which include a Yamaha headset, two Heil headsets and a mini portable Heil microphone. I have been using the Yamaha and Heil portable microphone lately. Get good audio reports from both. Saw that the DX Store had the PR781 and seems to be a good price.
