K3 Monitor feedback

Mike Reublin
I was playing with ALC and compression settings tonight, and turned on
the monitor function. If I turn it up high enough to hear myself (around
9), I get a loud BRRRRRRRRRR squeal, that has an echoic component.
Difficult to describe.

I don't recall hearing that when I first set up the mic. I have V3.63.

How can I regain use of the monitor?

Mike NF4L

To those who celebrate tomorrow, Happy Thanksgiving.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Don Wilhelm-4
Mike,

Are you using headphones when you turn up the monitor?  If you are using
the speaker, the microphone will pick up the speaker sound and result in
a lot of acoustical feedback.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Don -
I'm using phones. It doesn't sound quite like the usual feedback squeal.
It's modulated, sorta like rolling the 'r's in burrito.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Don Wilhelm-4
Mike,

Since you are using phones, do not overlook the possibility of RF
Feedback.  If the problem goes away when driving a dummy load (or using
TX TEST) but is present feeding an antenna, RF feedback is the first
thing to be suspicious of.  The normal best cure for RF Feedback is in
the antenna system rather than trying to put ferrites on everything in
the shack.

I had same thing here. If you have MAIN:MIC+LIN set to ON, try turning
it OFF or unplugging the Line In. That "fixed" my problem, but I haven't
determined why Line In is causing that problem.

I forgot to mention that it is NOT RF here, 'cuz it happens in "TEST"

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Ken Wagner K3IU
Thanks... I apparently did have a sneak path. I opened the Playback
Control on the sound card (SB Live! 24 bit) and muted the Mic and Line
In (to the sound card) and that fixed the problem with the MIC+LIN set ON.

Thanks, Mark, for the hint. I really wasn't that concerned 'cuz I rarely
use phone, but glad I fixed it anyway  ;-) .

That did it for me too. Ken. I'm glad you included Mark's suggestion, as
I didn't get it.

Happy Turkey Day! I'm thankful for the people on this reflector.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Mike,

I had the same thing happen to me. Unfortunately, I didn't read your post in time to respond. The K3 audio menu settings are per mode. When I switched to AM, I had the rear panel mic enabled and the MIC+LIN turned ON. When I turned MIC+LIN OFF the feedback went away. The operation of this menu function wasn't exactly clear to me so I had set it up the way I thought it should be for all modes (SSB, AM, PSK and FSK). I was wrong.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Mike Reublin
Thanks, Tom -
When I got the manual, my thought was "Wow. That's BIG". Now I'm
thinking it could easily be three or four times the number of pages to
explain everything in detail. OTOH, this group is probably faster than
trying to find it in a printed book. Learning, learning, learning..(sung
to the tune of 'Rawhide').

There doesn't appear to be a way to leave the volume of the monitor set
and just turn it off, correct?

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Don Wilhelm-4
Mike,

Easier than trying to absorb the entire manual, I go to the menu pages
and try to remember what menu items are available - that gives me a good
idea about how the radio can be configured.  Then if I want some
particular behavior, I study that portion of the manual.  The buttons
are usually relatively easy and self explanatory because they have labels.

You may want to attack your monitor on/off request with a couple of
macros - there is no on/off switch or button without macros.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

rlindzen
Maybe a list of popular macros and instructions on how to implement
them would be helpful.  Perhaps it could be posted on the Elecraft site.

I'm attempting to gather these into the K3 Utility Help.  There are a number
of them already there.

Maybe a list of popular macros and instructions on how to implement
them would be helpful.  Perhaps it could be posted on the Elecraft site.

Re: K3 Monitor feedback

Mike Reublin
In reply to this post by Tom Williams-4
Hmmm..

Any voice mode (I don't have FM) I get feedback with MIC+LIN on. Muting
the Line setting in WIndoze (Mine doesn't say whether it's in or out)
kills the feedback. Pulling the line-in or line-out doesn't kill the
feedback.

If the ProSet is laying on top of the rig, there is feedback at all
settings until I move it. Vox is off, so that indicates that the mic is
open all the time. Verified that by putting my hand around the mic,
cupped toward the K3 from a couple of feet away,
*SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLL*.

I don't understand the audio path, but ti me it seems like a flaw somewhere.

If I didn't like RTTY so much, I could just set MIC+LIN off, and be happy.

LINE OUT from the K3 includes Tx audio.  LINE IN goes to Tx audio. If
the computer has any path between LINE IN and LINT OUT, you'll get
feedback when you go to transmit.

You have the MIC ON and MIC gain non-zero, so the K3 is using the MIC.
Hence the feedback.

MIC+LIN means "Mic and line simultaneously".

You don't need MIC+LIN for RTTY. Just set "MIC SEL" to "line in" when
in "AFSK A" mode, and to whatever you use for a mic when in SSB modes.
The setting is remembered per-mode.

MIC+LIN is useful for things like SSTV, where you flip back and forth
between audio sources during a single QSO.

Have you thought about downloading the PDF version of the manual?

The PDF version has search functionality built in.  You can search by
word or phrase.

Try it you'll like it ;o)

I would have thought LINE OUT was Rx audio.
So the sound card is acting like an audio U-turn?
