K3: Need help loading new firmware

Gave up trying to get the big computer (Vista) to talk thru COM Ports.  
It just won't find one.....So went to my old Laptop w/Vista and it
picked up Com3, said it was communicating so I clicked on "Send All New
Firmware to K3".  It says "Sending firmware file hmcu0405.hex to
MCU"...... That was half hour ago....Still just nothing happening.  
Should my K3 be on or off for this?  Think I only did this once before
when I built it years ago.  P3 is on the way and I'm told I have to
upgrade the firmware.     W6JDB

Jay,

Your K3 should be on.  Make certain your USB adapter is really
connecting to the K3.  Sometimes things like modems masquerade as the
valid connection just because they echo the K3Utilitiy commands.  Go to
the Device Manager and see which com port has been assigned to the USB
adapter.

Your K3 should be powered in for this. After you click Send, there is a green progress bar at the bottom that should show steady progress. It takes about 5 minutes or so. The progress bar should be moving visibly

You also need to be sure that the K3 and the computer are set to the same baud
rate.
