Disconnect p3 power plug. Remove K3 power by pulling its power plug. Stop K3 utility. Plug k3 power back in and press K3 power on. Do not power on P3. Start k3 utility and load K3 firmware. Then restore P3 power.

The newest P3 Owner's manual revision (A5) covers this:
K3 MCU LD Error If you attempt to download firmware to the K3 while the P3 is turned on, the K3 may become unresponsive in bootstrap mode (MCU LD displayed on the K3’s LCD). Clear the condition as follows: Turn the P3 off. If the P3 is configured to turn on automatically when power is applied to the K3, disconnect power from the P3’s rear panel. It’s important that the P3 remain off throughout the procedure. Disconnect power from the K3’s rear panel. Exit the K3 Utility program at your computer. Reconnect power to the K3’s rear panel and turn the K3 on. Be sure the P3 does not come on with the K3. If it did, repeat the procedure from the beginning and be sure to unplug the P3’s power cable. It won’t work to turn the P3 off once it has turned on. Restart the K3 Utility at your computer, and reload the firmware. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Phil Theis Sent: Saturday, October 16, 2010 5:04 PM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 / P3 firmware Got new P3 and worked fine. When you power the K3 power on, you should expect to see MCU LD and the tx
red LED blinking because the MCU firmware needs to be completely loaded, and you probably loaded a partial load earlier. Just start the K3 Utility (but don't let the P3 power on) and load firmware. The k3 Utility should find the K3 in MCU LD state unless the P3 was turned on sometime after turning the K3 on. How do I get the K3 Utility so stop attempting to contact the K3?
I'm sure the MCU is only partially loaded. Every time I start the K3 Utility it just keeps trying to contact the K3. P3 is unplugged. To stop the K3 Utility, click the red X at the top right, or on the File
menu select "Exit", or click somewhere in the K3 Utility window and then press Alt-F4 on the keyboard. Just like any other Windows program. After stopping the K3 Utility, turn the K3 off (remove its power plug), wait 30 seconds, then plug the K3 in again, press the power button, then start the K3 Utility program again. It should find the K3. Then load firmware with the K3 Utility. Don't reconnect P3 power until after you've successfully loaded K3 firmware. Phil,
Don't worry about the K3 utility polling K3. When you turn the K3 back on AFTER the P3 is unplugged from power, K3 utility will find the K3 and finish the load. The key is that the P3 MUST be off, and NOT come back on during the K3 software load. UNPLUG physically the power from the P3. 73, Don, WB5HAK ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

OK, try cabling the RS-232 cable from the PC directly to the K3, removing
the P3 from the serial port circuit as well. It should be OK with the bypass relay in the P3, but it removes one more potential cause of the problem. Have you changed the COM port # on the Port tab of the K3 Utility from its earlier, successful value? Try rebooting your computer, maybe the COM port is in some funky state and simply restarting the K3 Utility isn't enough. Is there a real fix in the works for the problems associated with updating K3 and/or P3 firmware/software? The present solution of having to physically disconnect the K3 and P3 is an absurd solution for those who have their equipment installed in cabinets etc. I look forward to a fix in keeping with the usual expected Elecraft level of technology; kicking the tires or belting the chassis with a hammer won't do it.

The P3 can be optioned so you can turn it off from the front panel. How hard is that?
