K3/P3 utilities and error 127

David Sanders W4DES
I keep getting this from the k3util and p3 util on Linux Mint 17:
17:58:33 Connecting to ftp.elecraft.com. Please be patient, this takes a few seconds.
17:58:33 Unable to connect to Elecraft server. Error: 127

I can connect to ftp.elecraft.com from other programs and download the firmware, but I’d like to get the utilities working.

Any suggestions?

David W4DES

Communications timing out sometimes...

NK7Z
Hi,
When I am uploading using the memory management software provided by
Elecraft, to my K3, under Windows XP, on a half way fast system.  I
frequently get timeout errors...  I am set to 8N2...  Is that setting
correct, and is the timeout thing normal?

Problem solved.  Error: 127 indicates you don’t have curl installed (thanks to W8FGU).
Just needed: sudo apt-get install curl

A more informative error message would have saved a lot of head scratching.

David,

Do you really expect error messages in Linux to be informative and in
clear text? :-)
MS is better, but not by much.  You need to be a member of the GEEK
SQUAD to decipher many of them.

Sorry Eric about the OS related post, but I just couldn't resist.

Part of the charm of Linux is its inscrutability,
or so I've heard ;-)

Like guessing when you need sudo and when not --
depending some on the distro.

The K3 Frequency memory editor should set the RS232 parameters itself, so your setting of 8N2 shouldn't matter. We use 8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.  The timeout is fairly long. I set my K3 for 38400 bit/s and use an FTDI chipset USB to serial adapter like a KUSB with current drivers.

Re: Communications timing out sometimes...

NK7Z
Hi Dick,
Thanks for the input here!  My K3 is set for 38K, and uses a serial
cable...  Not USB.  I still get timeouts when set at 1 stop bit,
although I was unaware the program set the serial port.  So my changing
it does not change anything...  I wish I knew why the timeouts...
