I was looking at adding a SVGA card to my P3 to make it more useful for
RTTY when at FD or other remote activities. But after looking at the price of laptops I'm thinking of just getting a small one and having it alongside my K3. I don't have a need for the SVGA otherwise. It would already have a keyboard, be able to run Elecraft utilities for quick redoing of any setups like macros or exchanges and also run MMTTY or similar rather than just depending on the RTTY decoder in the K3. If I go this way I'll probably try to figure out how to tap the K3 IF and run the bandscope on the laptop as well. That way I could leave the P3 in the shack. The logging functions are already provided elsewhere so this would just be a RTTY/bandscope/utility rig. IMHP the most important aspect of the P3 is the SVGA card in the unit. If it would not have been an option I doubt that the P3 would be on my desk now small displays just do not cut it any longer. As far as the laptop for FD it would be easy but you would have extra cost with it. You would need something LP-PAN and a good soundcard. I use my iPad with my KX3 for a Panadapter/logger/spotting program also SOTA Watch and GPS to locate them all. A computer/iPad or any of the other devices work quite well and small, lightweight. 73, Fred/N0AZZ K3 Ser # 6730--KX3 # 2573--K2/100 # 6470-KAT100 P3/SVGA--KPA500--KAT500--W2 -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Jim Miller Sent: Sunday, July 14, 2013 6:01 PM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] P3SVGA vs Laptop I was looking at adding a SVGA card to my P3 to make it more useful for RTTY when at FD or other remote activities. As Fred said, "svga is the way to go" I just installed the svga card in my P3 and did the K3 mod for the power connection. Used the setup for the contest last weekend. Was blown away with the ease of moving around and seeing who is there on a big monitor .... Best thing I did..

I used a KX3 for Field Day with NaP3 Panadapter Display - can display between 48 and 192 Khz of spectrum depending on soundcard - just a laptop and a KX3.
