Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

Dick Dievendorff
I think that might mean that the target folder doesn't exist. Try
pressing the Default button on the firmware tab page which changes the
current firmware folder to one that is created, then Check versions
with the copy checkbox checked.

3.63.zip is still in the beta folder, where we first released it, and
its also in the main /firmware folder that is automatically checked and
downloaded by K3 Utility. n unzipping or other manual intervention is
required when K3 Utility grabs it for you.

The beta folder data will be removed soon, so the normal K3 Utility
method is preferred. Note that we also provide a direct link to the
/firmware ftp directory at the bottom of the K3 software page. I just
checked that and it also has the correct 3.63 files.

It is not necessary to get it via manual ftp or via your browser. K3
Utility should be able to get it and then download it directly to your K3.

I saw that Don Wilhelm had success getting it with K3 Utility. Anyone else?

The K3 Utility does indeed use WinInet. However clearing the browser
cache shouldn't be necessary as I think I tried to select options to
bypass local cache.

Clearing the cache may not do what you are trying to do unless you use
IE for this cache clearing step. Not all browsers use WinInet.

Eric -

I had just downloaded the zip file from the beta folder and unzipped it.
The check boxes on the utility to upload to the K3 were greyed out. I
restarted the utility (not for the first time) and it recognized that
there were new files on the server.

Downloaded and installed. Happiness reigns in the campsite.

No, it doesn't exist. I expected the utility to create it. I just
changed the path in the 'Local folder' box. I don't know what error
number 3 is, but I interpret the messages as meaning the utility
couldn't find the files on the server. But then I never went to
interpreter school.....

When it did work, it was after I manually created the folder. Can you
verify that the folder must be created first?

Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

Dick Dievendorff
In reply to this post by Mike Reublin
That's the disconnect.

The K3 Utility does create the "default" folder to receive firmware.  You
get to that folder by pressing the "Default" button.

The expectation was that most of the time people would be using that folder.
There's also a capability to navigate to other existing folders.  However
the K3 Utility doesn't create any folders except the default firmware and
configuration folders.

It's a useful suggestion for the K3 Utility to have the ability to create a
folder if one is named and doesn't exist.  In a subsequent K3 Utility
version I'll add the ability to create a folder if the one you name isn't
found.

Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

In reply to this post by Mike Reublin
WinInet was, as I recall, initially developed by the Microsoft Internet
Explorer team.  The WinInet DLL functions were deemed useful and important
enough that they were included in the "core OS".  They're documented as part
of the Windows 32 API.

Internet Explorer and the command line FTP client both use the WinInet DLL.
So does the K3 Utility.

It wouldn't be fair to say, however, that the K3 Utility does its internet
access through Internet Explorer.

IE offers a "Tools" menu option to clear the WinInet cache.  There's also a
Windows Control Panel "Internet" applet that has similar ability.

Actually, I think it the wininet functions come from the WinInet dll,
not the browser.  At least in my program it does. Maybe IE uses that dll?

Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

In reply to this post by wayne burdick
I was able to download the latest production software using the latest
K3 utility version 1.2.10.27:

Start the K3 utility with the K3 connected.
Press the default button to change the window to to the original
location (it had been set to my beta folder).
Check the box for copy new files from Elecraft into the local folder.
Then press the Check Versions Now button.

I did not proceed to the Send All Firmware to K3 button as I already had
updated my K3 from the beta site.

I have not had problems downloading from the site or to the K3.  However
I do respect the advice to not do anything else in the background while
doing the K3 update.  I have used 2 different USB adapters including one
from Radio Shack without problems both on my HP multimedia XP SP3 home
computer and on an older Averatec laptop.  I also frequently use a multi
port Serial I/O card in direct connection the the K3 without problems on
the home computer.

Version 3.63 with K3 100W and Steppir DB 36 made 550 contacts, 75 of 80
sections, in 17 hours of operating from Hawaii on 15, 20, and 40 meters
in the last weekend phone sweepstakes.  I thought it did very well.
However, the operator (me) could use an upgrade.  I was too busy running
stations to bother making a faster DVR recording for the Alpha, KH7T,
53, Pacific exchange.  My voice nearly gave out just saying the other
stations calls and serial numbers.

Aloha,
John KH7T

K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

hb9ari@bluewin.ch
In reply to this post by Dick Dievendorff
Hello,

Since ~ 1 year, i 've not upgraded the firmware.
(K3#1212) should be 2.56 ??? (i'm at office...)

My question: As i've never done hardware
modifications, can the FW 3.63 be installed
without problem?

Thank you for your help!

Thanks Dick -
I was just about to test it and put in a feature request.

Rudolf,

Yes, you can safely upgrade without adding hardware mods.
You must leave CONFIG: VFO MD set to SPI1 (default) until after the K3
VFO Noise Reduction  Mod has been installed.
That mod is not difficult - just 2 diodes and 2 resistors (all leaded
parts).

Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

hb9ari@bluewin.ch
Don,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I will leave the default setting to SPI1
as explained and load the new firmware.

May be the hardware mod(s) during this Winter...

My best 73,

Re: K3 Production Firmware Release (3.63)

Strangeness with the DVR.

If I press M1-4 to initiate a memory call all is OK. If I then hold M1-4 while the message is sending to enable repeat mode, on the first cycle the PTT does not drop at the end of the call for a couple of seconds, then all continues as normal. If I simple initiate with a hold, the first message does not have the extra PTT hold.

Mike

Edit - I notice the extra PTT delay is equal to the amount of time the message had played before holding the memory button.
