K3 RS232 Query

john petters
Hi folks,
I made up a serial lead today to run from a window 2k computer which has
a serial port. I've been using a Prolific USB / RS232 converter, which
is very noisy. This, however connects to the K3 using HRD software and
works correctly.
The lead I made up uses 3 wires as the K3 manual suggests. There is no
crossover. HRD will not see the K3.
I tested the lead by connecting the USB converter to it and it worked
perfectly with the new lead - so I don't think my lead is the problem. I
tried all the available com ports (the USB lead works on Com 8) the
RS232 should be on Com 1 or Com 2. Any suggestions?

Can another program find the K3 using your lead.  serial port speed issue? Do Com1 and 2 work with any other devices?  Are the com ports OK in the Windows device manager?

Hi Dick,
Just connected the USB adaptor to the serial lead on com 8, where it is,
and opened Winlog32 OK with full control.
Disconnected USB and plugged the serial lead into Com 1 and re-set the
programme to Com 1 and it will display the the frequency as I spin the
VFO, but I cannot control the K3 with the computer. I'm using the three
wires as specified in the manual. Pins 2, 3 & 5. Do I need to connect
the other two pins?
Haven't got any other serial devices I can try, but no reason to believe
the Com ports should be faulty.

No, it's just the three pins, RxD on 2, RxD on 3, and signal ground on 5.

If you can read IF unsolicited data from the K3 but it does not respond to
commands, perhaps TxD is not wiggling?    If the K3 configuration menu is
set to AUTOINF = AUTO 1 then the K3 will send an IF packet on VFO A change
without requiring a command.

Can the K3 Utility connect to the K3 with your cable?

Could you borrow a straight-thru 9-pin serial cable to help isolate the
problem?

John,

Your description is rather confusing... were you using the same
home-made cable with the USB adapter as you are now trying to use with
COM1? If so, it suggests that your COM1 is defective.

John,

You will not need to connect any more pins, but you can try putting a
jumper between pins 7 and 8 at the computer end of the cable.  No
guarantee that it will help, that depends on whether your application
tries to do handshaking, but it certainly will not hurt anything.

You did not state that you closed and restarted Winlog32 after you
changed the com ports.  You might even want to try a computer restart.
