K3 RX Ant question

Alan Price-3

I have a K2 with the KBPF3 option, among others.  When I listen to the BC band with the KBPF3, it sounds great, but when I listen to any shortwave frequencies, the KBPF3 does not make a real difference.  Am I missing something?

Re: K3 RX Ant question

Guy, K2AV
That sounds about right.

"Make a difference" is a problematic understanding unless you are
talking before and after installing.  Once installed in your K3 RX the
KBPF3 is invoked whenever you are listening on any frequency that
requires it.  So A/B testing is hard, unless you have the K3 opened up
and are putting it in and taking it out making comparisons.

The ham bands have pass band filters in use, and reception gradually
diminishes tuning into the HF broadcast bands.  Without the KBPF3,
this diminishment is gradually heard, but is not hugely noticeable,
say in the 40m commercial broadcast band, given the power levels some
stations are running. The AM BC band IS severely attenuated by the K3
through main ant jack(s) without the KBPF3 and RX and jumps up quite a
lot listening through the RX antenna and KBPF3.

Re: K3 RX Ant question - KBPF3 not working.

I find that my KBPF3 makes SWL worse. If I turn it off in the configure menu it works much better, so I must think it is not working. I sent a message to K3 support and am waiting for an answer. My KBPF3 is brand new so I am guessing that despite wearing the wrist grounding strap and using a ground pad the static may have gotten mine.

First, I assume you meant "K3", not "K2" --

I assume what you are doing is just going into the CONFIG menu, finding the
KBPF3 item, and turning the knob between "NOR" and "NOT INST", and seeing no
difference. This is normal behavior, because you are not actually changing
anything.

You have to POWER DOWN the K3 and then power it back on for the change to
take effect. Tune in a SWBC station on, say, 31 meters, and perform this
test turning the K3 off between setting changes. You'll see having the KBPF3
in-circuit makes a difference of several S units.
