Been trying out a pc type headset with boom mike and a
3.5mm stereo plug on the mike lead. Having what I like to think of as a logical mind(?), I made up a 3.5mm stereo to mono adapter to plug into the socket on the rear of the K3 which is labeled 'mono'. This 'sort of' worked but kept losing the connection intermittently. The adapter plug did seem to be a bit of a loose fit which caused me have a closer look at the KIO3 analogue board and I noticed that the mono mike socket appeared to be a stereo type with presumably, just the tip connected. Anyhow I just plugged the stereo plug from the boom mike straight into the 'mono' socket and it works fine, better fit too. Can't find any mention of this in the manual so wondering if the use of a stereo plug is the recommended way...? 73, Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 145) PS. The VOX on the K3 is a joy to use..... _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Normally a computer mic. has a condenser element and requires DC bias via
the mic. jack. Don't use a mono adapter. Set your menu for rPH bias. The 'mono' label is tricky. I think it means that the mic. audio is mono but not the jack. The jack is a mono jack on the K2 proset from Elecraft, yet it
requires bias (rP.L bias). I believe the socket is a mono socket also. 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 I am told I talk in shorthand and then smudge it. - J.R.R. The jack is physically a stereo jack, but the audio path is MONO (tip) only. 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. is this just because it's easier to stock just stereo sockets?
The mic plug on my Heil K2 proset is mono. And it work just fine. 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 -- Our society must make it right and possible for old people not to fear the young or be deserted by them, for the test of a civilization is the way that it cares for its helpless members. -Pearl S. My cheap radio shack "computer headset" works just fine, too. The "ring" terminal on the jack is not connected, so you can safely use a MONO (i.e., single channel) or a STEREO (dual channel) connector, as long as it is the correct diameter. 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. David,
No, I believe it is because most of the computer mics use a stereo plug. A mono jack would short out the ring and cause some mics to not work properly. Using a stereo jack for mono signals is usually a good idea, particularly if one does not know what can be placed on the ring contact. 73, Don W3FPR David Ferrington, M0XDF wrote: > is this just because it's easier to stock just stereo sockets? > The mic plug on my Heil K2 proset is mono. Thanks, that makes sense to me - that's for the explanation.
I have a mono headset with mic, intended for an IP phone and that uses a stereo plug, although I hadn't noticed. It's a nice lightweight headset too, shame its only a mono earpiece. 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174 -- When you want to test the depths of a stream, don't use both feet. -Chinese Proverb On 1 Sep 2008, at 15:01, Don Wilhelm wrote: > David, > > No, I believe it is because most of the computer mics use a stereo > plug. Dynamic microphones normally use mono plugs, which short the bias. Electret ones normally connect ring and tip, and phantom feed the power to the element. -- David Woolley "The Elecraft list is a forum for the discussion of topics related to Elecraft products and more general topics related ham radio" List Guidelines <http://www.elecraft.com/elecraft_list_guidelines.htm> _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
