K3- Replacement 12-Volt Power Cable

Elecraft mailing list
Hi Guys,

Please advise what options I have for purchasing replacement 12-Volt power supply cables for the K3 with the power connector already attached.  Do groups like DX Engineering and HRO sell them?  Also, does the K3 use Anderson Powerpole connectors or Powerwerx connectors, or are they the same?  I believe both types of connectors may come in different amperage ratings, so what amperage do I need to mate with the K3? TNX & 73, Dick- K9OM

Dick,

You can order the power cable from Elecraft.
The part number is KPCA-F, it has an APP connector on one end and ring
terminals on the other end.  The wire is 12 guage.

Dick,

Powerwerx is a company that sells Power Poles, but be aware that on Ebay
you might find Power Pole 'copies,' not the originals mad by the
Anderson company.

As for power ratings, yes, there are different power ratings, but the
15, 30 and 45 Amp versions all use the same plastic housing, which means
they will connect with one another.   Only the actual metal contactors
are different sizes.

If your K3 is around 3-6  feet from the power supply then the 12 Gauge
wire should be fine.   For longer runs, you might want to consider a 10
Gauge cable due to the voltage drop.   For some good info on them, go to
the Powerwerx site here:

Power Pole connectors come in MANY sizes -- different housings,
different inserts. The 15A and 30A inserts are pretty easy to install if
you buy the inserts the fit the wire. The 30A inserts are good up to
#12. The 45A inserts are needed for #10, and they are VERY tricky to
install. I've installed many hundreds of Power Poles, all soldered.

The caution about where to buy them is very good advice.

BTW -- the red/black zip cord is NOT ideal for use around RF. Twisted
pair is FAR better, because twisting strongly resists differential mode
RF pickup.

What I have been doing for already-constructed Zip-cord leads with APP
connectors already installed is to secure one end of the cable, un-mate
the APP housings at the other end, separate the parallel conductors, and
twist them together again one over the other as "DIY" twisted pair, then
remate the housings.  Works fine albeit shortens the cable a bit.

Sounds good, Phil. If you care to start from scratch, an even better
solution is to buy two colors of stranded THHN at the big box store, cut
equal long lengths of both cables, tie one end to something like a vise
attached to a bench, the other to a drill, with the cables stretched out
flat, and run the drill slowly until you've passed the degree of twist
that you want (more is better). Then set the drill down for a day or so
to let the cable "remember" its twist. When the cable is removed from
the drill, it will untwist a bit, and the twisting will not be uniform
from one end to the other, but it's good enough.
