Dear Elecrafters!
Since few days ago, my K3 (S/N3050) has no response from its RS232 port. First no frequency data became obtained by Logger32. Then, I tried to connect by K3 Utility, I tried port refresh, port test, etc. But no reply from the K3. I confirmed K3 Utility program is sending polling signal to K3 RS232 port but seems no reply from K3. I use USB/RS232 converter between P/C and the rig. I changed the connection with other rig such as FT-2000, and it works without problem using same com port, so that I'm sure the RS232 of K3 is something wrong. I'm afraid if K3 got a kind of surge damage because we had a bad wx with lightening just before the reported malfunction occur. I posted same question to tech support but if anyone had same problem please advise how to fix this problem. vy 73 Atsu, JE1TRV from Tokyo Japan ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
The advice I received from tech support was to check the KIO3 "daughter
board" for any open circuits, and then to check U1 on the KIO3A I/O board. It is a small surface mount chip, very common, and if you can try to replace it I would, because a replacement board is $115 plus shipping. I just went through that! I have now added a Tripplite DB-9 surge protector to the RS-232 port of my K3, and made very sure that the computer and radio are connected to a common ground. I think that the surge protector would be a useful adjunct for any K3 - for $20 plus shipping it's a lot cheaper than rteplacing the IO board. 73, Pete N4ZR The World Contest Station Database, updated daily at www.conteststations.com The Reverse Beacon Network at http://reversebeacon.net, blog at reversebeacon.blogspot.com, spots at telnet.reversebeacon.net, port 7000 On 7/29/2010 3:20 AM, [hidden email] wrote: > Dear Elecrafters! > Since few days ago, my K3 (S/N3050) has no response from its RS232 port. > First no frequency data became obtained by Logger32. > Then, I tried to connect by K3 Utility, I tried port refresh, port > test, etc. But no reply from the K3. > I confirmed K3 Utility program is sending polling signal to K3 RS232 port > but seems no reply from K3. > > I use USB/RS232 converter between P/C and the rig. > I changed the connection with other rig such as FT-2000, and it works > without problem using same com port, so that I'm sure the RS232 of K3 is > something wrong. > > I'm afraid if K3 got a kind of surge damage because we had a bad wx with > lightening just before the reported malfunction occur. > > I posted same question to tech support but if anyone had same problem > please advise how to fix this problem. > > vy 73 > Atsu, JE1TRV from Tokyo Japan > > ______________________________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft > Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm > Post: mailto:[hidden email] > > This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net > Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html > > > Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Hmmm... What are the BAUD rates for the RS232 and the K3? Do they still match? You didn't mention that in your post.

The K3 Utility tries all four RS-232 speeds, so that shouldn't matter for
the K3 Utility. Are you giving the programs the correct COM port? Try another cable, another computer, etc.. There is a K3 Utility Help page on Troubleshooting USB to Serial adapter issues.
