I am pleased to say that K3 serial number 128 is built and working. The
build process took a little longer than expected (10 hours) but as this was my first Elecraft kit I progressed slowly and surely. No major issues were encountered and the radio worked first time. I have a few photos of the build process and some comments on the radio at http://www.g4zfe.com/K3.html The wait was long but worth it.I am most impressed by the selectivity and look forward to using the K3 in a contest. I started off with DSP version 1.43 and I was very impressed by the Noise Reduction facility as I live in an electrically noisy suburban area. The NR made listening so much easier on the ears although care was needed as too high a NR value would result in weaker CW stations not being heard at all! I have now upgraded to DSP version 1.45 (plus MCU 1.48) and the NR feature seems to not work as well. I have tried the higher settings (3 and 4) of all NR 4 modes in CW and the noise reduction doesn't seem to be working as well as before. Has anyone else noticed this? 73 de Rich, G4ZFE K3/100 #128 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. The filed test group is currently testing a new code release that addresses this, and adds... oops, I shouldn't say that yet! 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I haven't gotten my K3 yet, so haven't tried to update....but it appears the download page doesn't say what's new/deleted in a firmware version. Is that information part of the upgrade? In another File? With each firmware release there is a notes file that is fetched and displayed by the K3 Utility when new firmware is seen by the program. It can also be viewed at any time from the Utility by selecting Help ->K3 Firmware Release Notes... 73, Lyle KK7P _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. It's true, but very shortly a new version of the firmware will be released. It is presently in beta testing (I don't think Elecraft will object to my saying this) and in my opinion has returned the NR function to all of its former glory. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco K3 no. 00007 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Firmware authors update hfwnotes.rtf periodically. As firmware is made
available to the Elecraft file server, an updated hfwnotes.rtf file is copied to the K3/firmware directory on Elecraft's FTP server, the same directory as the firmware files. The K3 Utility copies hfwnotes.rtf from the Elecraft file server to your "firmware folder" whenever any firmware files are transferred. The K3 Utility Help menu Firmware Release Notes function displays the hfwnotes.rtf that is in your firmware folder. I am pleased to report that Noise Reduction in DSP 1.46 is back to as it was. It is very useful in my noisy urban environment. I also spend time as a BC SWL so I was pleased to see AM in the latest firmware. I assume that synchronous AM will be arriving later Thanks for the all the work on the frequent firmware updates. 73 de Rich, G4ZFE K3 #128 _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
