K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

Jim / W6JHB
Been using my K3 number 4359 on CW for almost a month - very happy. Last night I hooked up my SignaLink USB and tried PSK31. Got a waterfall display, signals present and being decoded, but NO output when CocoaModem set to transmit. Figured I had something hosed in the SL jumpers - checked three times, they are OK. So, hooked up my Elecraft MH2 Mic and thought I'd give SSB a try this afternoon. NO OUTPUT!

I have the K3 set on 14.200 (dummy load), RF power at 40w, Mic Sel = FP.L, Mic + Lin = OFF. I press the PTT button on the mic, I get the red TX light on the K3, the radio appears to go into transmit mode, but no inkling of RF when I speak into the mic. I have the Mic control at 23, CMP = 0, Mon = 53.

So, what have I forgotten to set? I'm betting that whatever is hosed with the SSB setting may fix my PSK31 problem, too. Anyone have any suggestions?

Tnx, Jim / W6JHB

What is selected for your SSB and DATA transmit filter?  If you are
using a 2700 Hz filter is the offset value set properly?

Got the SSB problem fixed - as suspected, it was my fault - I had mis-read the manual regarding the bias setting for the MH2 Mic. Ooops!

But, it did NOT resolve the PSK31 issue. I finally got CocoaModem to trip the PTT on the K3, but still no RF flowing. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone using CocoaModem and the K3 to do PSK31. Maybe we can go over settings to see what I've messed up...

Don Wilhelm-4
Jim,

Your last post indicated that you were using a SignalLink to drive the
K3.  The transmit audio level from the Signallink is attenuated for
driving a microphone input - if you are using the K3 Line Input, there
may not be adequate drive.

The K3 Line Input level expects a level that is available from a normal
soundcard Line  Out.  The SignalLink provides Mic Level output which is
a much lower level.

Try plugging the Signallink into the rear mic input (set the K3 Mic sel
accordingly), and see if you can obtain good transmit audio.  If so,
then your Signallink audio level must be increased to allow use of the
Line Input on the K3.

The SignalLink website has some information about increasing the output
level.

KAT-100 problem

Eugene Balinski
All,

I recently picked up a used  KAT-100 to use with my
K2/100.  The KAT-100 appears to be DOA.  No LED's light up.

Before I email the previous owner, are there any special
settings on the K2/100 that I need to be sure are correctly
set ?  I have buzzed out the control cable (it is correct
per the schematic).  The KIO2 is installed.

Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be
appreciated.

Thanks es

Re: KAT-100 problem

Gene,

Did you supply power to the KAT100 (note, no dash in the model number
for Elecraft products).
You must supply power to the coaxial 2.1 mm jack on the rear panel prior
to the time you power on the K2.

Re: K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

Folk: my SSB -and- data problems have been corrected. The problem was, as expected, at the user end of the chain! The SSB problem turned out to be the Mic bias not being set properly: operator mis-read the manual!

The PSK31 / data problem ended up being not enough Mic drive. Tried it with the SignaLink's output going to the rear Mic connector (per Don, W3FPR) and it worked fine. Chen (W7AY) reminded me that the K3's LineIn drive level is adjusted by the front panel "Mic" control. I had set that to full counterclockwise at the start, per the S/L documentation and never had advanced it past zero. Turning it up around 20 gave me plenty of RF output. Haven't made a QSO with it yet on PSK31, but I know there is now RF going down the coax!!!

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone - much appreciated.

Re: K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

Jim,

I am using essentially the same setup.  I got a lot of help from Chen (W7AY) the author of CocoaModem.

I also had a problem of no output and it turned out to be that I was using the default jumper settings on the Signalink and you need to boost the output by setting jumper 3 (JP3).  Otherwise, the audio level is too low to drive the K3.

So, if you have not done that then I suggest you give it a try.  From Chen's advice, I have my audio level to about 0.25 volts RMS (I think that is right, I am going from memory)...along with the Signalink TX level of about 1 oclock this gives the recommended 4 (to 5) bars on the K3 ALC bar graph.  More then that and you will be overdriving.
