Aloha,
I built my new K3 SN 469 over last weekend and I have been having a lot of fun with it on CW, but I'm still not sure that I have it configured properly for SSB. I have the latest firmware, I am using a Proset-K2, and I have the mic input set for front panel, high gain, and bias on. I have configured the filters and I have done ref cal by zero beat with WWVH. When I try to do the mic gain, compression, and ALC setting steps on manual page 26, I find that while the ALC attack is very fast, the decay is very slow. So I speak into the microphone and get my 6 ALC bars immediately, then it takes maybe 3-4 seconds for the bars to slowly disappear. Is this normal? I haven't found a front panel mic gain and compression combination yet that gives me what looks like a normal bounce on my power meter. I must be missing something in the configuration. I haven't tried it on the air yet; I will recruit some local help later in the week to give me a listen. And concerning the ref cal. I did get the 1 ppm reference, and I tried to follow the ref cal steps on page 47, "method 3" but when I tap 1 according to the instructions the display doesn't change at all. Is this method not implemented yet? thanks, Curt AH6RE _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Curt,

A number of people have commented about the (apparent) lack of average power with SSB processing in the present implementation. Wayne and Lyle, the firmware guys, have stated that they want to review current behavior of the processor and make changes as necessary. Imho, the modulation is very good for casual QSOs but is lacking for contest situations. This is also the opinion of several other OMs in southern Germany. vy 73 de toby _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Curt,
Tx SSB.This is normal. SSB tx signal from K3 is good but I understand that in the future there will be some improvement (firmware). I have adjusted compresion to 25 and than MIC gain to the point that there is no distortion. That way I can get more dynamic signal (good average power). I'm using external receiver to monitor the audio during this adjustment.
