K3: SSB vs. CW/DATA A with TVTR

Udo Langenohl - DK5YA
When running my K3 with my DB6NT/Kuhne transverter on 144MHz IF out is
set to 1mW. That's o.k. for both CW and DATA A (WSJT), when 1mW is good
for 25 W out at the TVTR. Thats perfect for my 2x GU74b amp.
But in SSB it's completely different. My Heil Pro Set (electret) is
working great but with mic gain set to "10" and compress to "20" ALC
shows 6 to 7 units, compress some 10 but there aint no 1mW out at the IF
out anymore. It's quite below, app. 0.5mW in the peak and thats good for
not more than 10 W out at the transverter.
I wonder why in SSB the IF out is much lower than in CW and DATA A mode.
More mic gain aint help of course.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong (probably?).

Udo,

If you are measuring average power rather than peak power, you will see
a marked reduction in average power with SSB even though the peaks are
the same power as CW and DATA.

Set your microphone level in the order indicated in the manual (you can
use TX TEST).  Set Compression to zero, then adjust the mic gain until
you see 5 to 7 bars on the ALC meter.
After that, increase the compression as desired.

Hi Udo

Have you tried adjusting the "TXG VCE" in the configuration menu ?

Don,

yes I'm measuring both peak and average power. I checked IFout pwr with
my HP436A both in SSB and DATA A/CW. Did the same with my Bird peak/avg
meter and the 25W head at the TVTR.
Mic gain shows up to 7 bars in the peak and with compression 0 or up to
20 there's no increase. Max is 0.45 mW in SSB, says the HP463A, and 1.1
mW in CW/DATA A.

I'll try ''TXG VCE'', John G4ZTR had that idea.
