K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!

pastormg

I can't believe that Elecraft is sending my K3 requiring a signature!  How do they expect a working person to be at home when UPS delivers to get a signature???  When I ordered the rig over the phone nobody told me that this is the way they ship.  And to boot, I would have to drive over one hour to a UPS delivery center to pick up the radio. I certainly hope they will call me tomorrow and straighten this whole mess out.  This certainly does not give me a good impression about the company.  Just venting!!!!  Mark KB3Z

Leave a note on your door for UPS asking them to deliver the package from
Elecraft- sign and date it.
If I were shipping $2K of product, I too would require a signature- just
good business practice.

Not many companies are going to ship a 2K$ item without a signature..  If it
gets lost, UPS or Fedex doesn't like to pay..

I don't think Elecraft is any different than any other company in this
respect....

You will learn to appreciate the company and their services-products..

I have had many packages shipped to me from Elecraft.  I live so far out
in the boonies the UPS folks need help finding me.  Elecraft has NEVER
sent anything requiring a signature to my rural abode.

Re: K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!

  Mark,

I know, many ship to me with "signature required", and the UPS (or
FedEx) man delivers a bit after lunchtime.  So if we go out to lunch, I
will not be here when the parcel arrives, and it is a pain.

I live at the end of a 1/4 mile driveway at the end of a "subdivision"
with a private road 0.7 mile long, where there are only 8 lots in the
subdivision.  If a parcel is left on my front door stoop, it will be
safe from weather as well as others who might "happen by" and see an
insured parcel sitting there - no-one just "happens by" at my house, and
if they are not expected, may just be greeted with a shotgun.  However,
I am an exception - both the regular mail carrier and the  UPS normal
driver know where to put parcels that arrive when I am not home.  We do
have neighbors who we can trust who check on the situation when we are gone.

My situation is NOT the norm where people may not be at home when the
delivery attempt is made, and the parcel can sit exposed on a porch for
all passers-by to see.  For those, high value shipments should require
signature confirmation.

If you are in an area where a high value parcel can be left on your
doorstep for 24 hours with no problem, then when you order, tell the
sales person to uncheck the "signature required" item, and I am certain
it will be honored.

Mark...

I agree with your frustration. There seem to be two solutions
(aside from the long long drive to a UPS center): (a) insist that that
shipping company not require a signature (seldom works, probably because
shippers themselves are too careless to follow through), and (b) leave a
signed, dated note in a prominent place for the UPS driver to either
leave the package without a signature or leave it off at a neighbor's
house (this seems to work in my rural area but may not in the inner city).

If a package of mine disappeared into the maw of a distribution
center (in my case, about a 60 mile round trip away), I believe I would
stop payment on the credit card purchase for non-delivery. This is a bit
like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face, but it might just
generate enough attention so that the occasion would not recur. One or
two of the other local carriers are using my local Post Office as a
drop-off center. In my case, this is only a 15 mile drive away.

One of my other pet annoyances about UPS is that the driver will
occasionally leave a (smallish) note on my garage door. Since I raise
the door with a remote from the outer end of the driveway, the chances
are almost nil that I will see this note...it simply disappears into the
garage's overhead space, and when I put the door down, it is on the
outside when I am on the inside, a typical catch-22.

If you follow the tracking number link in the shipping notice email from Elecraft to the UPS website, you may find that UPS, like FedEx, provides a link for the recipient to override the signature-at-the-door requirement on delivery.

I would totally expect something of this value to require a signature.  To
that end, I make sure that I am going to be home (or have someone in the
house) when a parcel is to be delivered.  If I cannot get anyone there, I
have it delivered to a friend or neighbours house.

I had mine shipped to a UPS store near where I work.  When I went in to pick

kind of surprised that they didn't want me to provide identification or a

Re: K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!

Bob Naumann W5OV
In reply to this post by pastormg
Mark,

To provide a shippers' perspective on this, just suppose that it was
delivered and left at your front door without anyone signing for it.

Then, some criminal comes to your home, sees it on your porch, and takes it.

Your radio is gone, and UPS has proof that they were there (their GPS-based
system proves where the driver was and where he scanned the barcode on your
package) and who loses?

In this case *YOU* would lose all of your money.

Elecraft would not, and neither would UPS. UPS can prove that the package
was left on your porch.

This is why signature required is appropriate for high-value shipments. It
ultimately protects you from loss.

If you cannot be at home to receive a shipment, as others have suggested
make other arrangements - either to be at home yourself (preferred) or have
it delivered somewhere else.

73,

Bob W5OV

The delivery notice that UPS left had several options for you. Just call
them and they will work with you to make delivery. Usually they will try
again the next day - you can also leave a signed note for them with your
instructions.

I leave in the country with the nearest UPS center about 60 miles away over
the mountains. I have always gotten very good service from both UPS & FedEx
in regards to redelivering.

Re: K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!! [END of Thread]

Let's end this thread for now.

As a general note, we insure K3 shipments due to their high value. UPS,
and most other shippers,  do not allow us to waive the signature
requirement on insured packages. Individual drivers may have agreements
with recipients that are different than this, be we can't control that
from here.

Best bet for large value shipments is to ship them to your work address
if you do not have someone at home to receive them. That's what I do
when I buy high value items for my personal use.

The original poster on this thread called us and we were able to reroute
the package to his work address.

I have had good service with FedEx and the US Postal Service but not
with UPS.

I live on a private road out in the country.  The mailboxes are about a
mile away from my house, near where the private road starts.  The UPS
guy insists on leaving packages sitting on top of the mailboxes so he
doesn't have to drive the extra distance on the private road.
Apparently he was documenting the packages as being delivered to my
doorstep.

That is a clear violation of UPS policy.  However it took me half a
dozen phone calls over a period of weeks, ending up with his
supervisor's supervisor, to get him to stop doing that.  I notice he is
still doing it with my neighbors.

I've had a lot of problems with UPS over the years.

Re: K3 Shipped But Requires Signature!!!

Noted.  I dont blame Elecraft, however.  Elecraft is just
using a "cheap" method of sending because, well, because
this is what we asked for...

Let me tell you my latest UPS story...

I ordered a XG2 and two KSYN Shields from Elecraft and had
them sent UPS Ground.  Both my wife and I work, so we were
not home when UPS came to the door.

I wondered where the package was, so I looked it up on the
UPS website.  It said it was "Delivered to a Woman".  Said
so right there on the website!  But I never got the package!
I checked with all my neighbors, they didnt get the package
either!

I emailed Elecraft.  They got right on it and sent me my
order via USPS (Thanks!  Handled just as I would have
handled it!).

Next day, I had a Orange tag on my door asking me to
URGENTLY contact UPS at an *ORLANDO* address (I live in
Tampa, 100 miles away).  But there was no phone number, only
a street address!  I looked the phone number up on the web
and called.  The VRU on the phone number had no option for
me to ask about my package shipment error, and hung up on
me!  So I called it back and lied to it.  I then got a human
who took my number and said "some one in Tampa will contact
you within the hour".

Several hours later, a nice young voice did contact me to
tell me that the package was delivered "to a woman" at my
address.  I reminded her that I had no package and that
there was no woman at my address at that time.  She then
said "Are you sure?  Have you asked everybody at that
address?"  I reminded her that it was a single family home,
that my wife is the only female at that address and that
neither she nor I had been home to get the package.  She
again asked me "are you sure?"  So I said "Do you have a
delivery signature?"  She told me "No, the shipper did not
require one, but from now on, we will not deliver packages
to your address without a signature, no matter how small".

I gave up in desperation, told her that Elecraft had already
mailed me a replacement order and if they find the package,
they should just send it back to Elecraft.

That evening, a UPS agent came to my door.  They had me sign
a non delivery form, which they did not offer to give me a
copy of.  Then they told me that they would get back to me
after their investigation of the package's wherabouts.

One work week later, Im still waiting for them to get back
to me.

Use USPS or FedEx next time, as I will.  After this and the
utter destruction of a video server securely packaged in a
ATA certified SKB shipping crate that I shipped UPS ground
the week before for my company, and I have had a bad month
dealing with UPS.

Mark,

To provide a shippers' perspective on this, just suppose
that it was
delivered and left at your front door without anyone signing
for it.

Then, some criminal comes to your home, sees it on your
porch, and takes it.

Your radio is gone, and UPS has proof that they were there
(their GPS-based
system proves where the driver was and where he scanned the
barcode on your
package) and who loses?

In this case *YOU* would lose all of your money.

Elecraft would not, and neither would UPS. UPS can prove
that the package
was left on your porch.

This is why signature required is appropriate for high-value
shipments. It
ultimately protects you from loss.

If you cannot be at home to receive a shipment, as others
have suggested
make other arrangements - either to be at home yourself
(preferred) or have
it delivered somewhere else.

Bob W5OV

People's experience with UPS is obviously all over the place. My own experience with UPS is excellent. When a signature is required, they will make three attempts (three days in a row) to deliver it. After that I would have to go to their depot which is fortunately not that far away. That may have happened once when we forgot or weren't able to arrange for somebody to be home. I will choose UPS ground again.

Please also note that for every bad experience with UPS there are an
equivalent number of bad experiences with FEDEX, DHL and many, many, many
more horror stories with the Post Office - especially if you add
international shipping to the mix.

All of them involve people and people make mistakes. As one who ships
thousands of packages a year with UPS, I can report that the problems are
with much less than one tenth of one percent of the total. UPS handles
millions of packages and there are bound to be some small percentage where
things go wrong.

For those who end up as one of that very small percentage, that does not
help. But, the reality is that such problems are very, very rare.

Don't take my comments as defending UPS - their weak point is not being
able to respond adequately when things do go wrong - it's just that it is
indeed rare when they do. I tell my UPS rep that they either get an "A" or
an "F" when things go wrong. There's no middle ground with them.
