K3 - Some Questions

Bruce W1UJR
Hello all,

Modes
As I used my K3 on LSB, AM and CW only, wonder if there is a menu setting or trick to shutting off the unused modes? I'd like to not have to scroll through them. Would a macro be the way to go here?

AM Broadcast Bands
I like to listen to late night AM on the broadcast bands, but my reception seems pretty weak, except at the top of the band. I do have the general receive module installed, any other tricks or is this normal K3 design.

Mac Memories
Looking for Apple Mac based software which can load and organize the frequency memory setting.
Have looked high and low, suggestions?

Cordially,
Bruce J. Howes W1UJR

You can turn off FM mode (CONFIG:FM MODE).

There's a high-pass filter in line with the T/R switch, but that
should only reduce the low end of the AM broadcast band. If you have a
signal generator (XG3, etc.), try injecting a signal at the antenna
jack and compare to other bands.

The Windows version should run on emulation on a mac. I'm not sure if
anyone is working on a mac native version.

Re: K3 - Some Questions

Bruce W1UJR
Thanks Wayne, replies/questions below.

Modes - found the FM, currently shut off, so perhaps I should just create a macro to mode switch?

AM Broadcast - yes, that explains what I noticed, seems to really attenuate anything below 1200 Kc

Memories - Using on a Macbook Air, I like Parallels, but too much to install for just doing the memory setting.
I do greatly appreciate that Elecraft offers the Mac utilities for the K3 and P3, very nice to have that ability.

More Feedback to Wayne
Love, love, love the KPA500, you and your staff did an amazing job on that one, and running off 120 is very nice as well. Enjoying the building process, and look forward to the antenna tuner. Paired with the K3 and P3, I find little need to use my Icom 7700 and PW1 amp any longer. The K3 hands down as become my "go to" rig. Looking forward to the next set of Elecraft projects.

You could. But since there are MODE UP/DN switches, I think you'll
find that you never need more than two key taps to change modes. The
mode is also remember per-band.

Also check out the per-band quick memories (M1-M4). You could set them
up for as many as four different modes on each band, so you can
quickly get to favorite starting place for each mode.

It's about 20-25 dB by the time you get to 500 kHz. This helps protect
the K3's PIN-diode T/R switch from extremely strong low-frequency
signals.

If you want to bypass the high-pass filter, you can install a KXV3
module and connect your AM broadcast RX antenna to RX IN.

with respect to your comments about "Mac memories", and lack of software for the Mac.

What are the K3 software commands that allow you to set and retrieve the memory settings?

Thanks,  Barry K8LEF

The USCG shut down LORAN-C last year, and the Middletown CA station no
longer overloads everything, regardless of the filters.  It was huge
here in Auburn, maybe 130 km or a bit more, at night running close to
-20 dBm, sometimes stronger.  I was hearing its products weakly on 160
... not kidding, bigger signal than some local 50KW AM stations.

I have the KBPF3, or whatever it is called, and I hear down to 500 KHz
just fine.  Even copied a couple of the XSH stations near the Holy
Frequency.

Nice radio, Wayne.

I'm well into the development of the K3 Memory Manager for Mac (and possibly Linux if I can get all of the custom UI elements to work properly under all flavors of Linux). Really. No kidding.

I'm eyeball deep in the KPA Utility and XG3 Utility for Mac/Linux at the moment. But the Memory Manager is next in line. Really. :)

A balun in line with the antenna can also attenuate signals on the AM BCB. I have found that feeding the antenna (in my case a CF 135-ft zepp) directly into the KXV3 (bypassing the Balun Designs "Tuner" balun) adds an additional 25 dB increase in signal strength at the low end of the AM BCB. This complicates the switching arrangement a bit, but a ceramic DPDT knife switch came to the rescue.

If you want to bypass the high-pass filter, you can install a KXV3

We will be working on the Mac version of the K3 memory editor after we
complete the Mac versions of KPA500 Utility and XG3 Utility.
