I finally ordered and have received my West Mountain COMspkr for use
with my KX3. Work very nice and no RF sensitivity (even with 6-elem yagi pointed at . I played with the HI CUT control and found a "2-oclock setting pleased me. I have no equalization set on the KX3. With the control full CW sound is very flat and crisp but hear more background noise (this evaluation listening to 6m with preamps on and 20m with preamps off). Not using the COMspkr with my K3 as I have an old unamplified 8-inch National Radio speaker that I like. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com "Kits made by KL7UW" Dubus Mag business: [hidden email] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Thanks for the review Ed. On that basis I have ordered a pair for my KX3 for use in the shack, as I wanted stereo and RF immunity particularly.
73 PS Ed I am working towards getting back on 144MHz EME again, with a smaller system than previously, but should be enough to work you on JT and possibly CW in ideal conditions. (2 x 2WL I0JXX XPOL yagis about 15dBd gain and 1kW from SSPA - special high power permit for EME). Lot of work to do to get there though. 73 David Anderson GM4JJJ > On 15 Jan 2014, at 06:01, Edward R Cole <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I finally ordered and have received my West Mountain COMspkr for use with my KX3. Brian,
In the EU we get a warranty on anything we buy, so if they do break within a year or even 2 I will get them replaced or my money back, but I hope that I don't have to go down that route. 73 David Anderson GM4JJJ > On 15 Jan 2014, at 20:51, Brian Hemmis <[hidden email]> wrote: > > I bought a pair of West Mtns for my next door neighbor in OH who claimed he was hearing me on his computer speakers. Yes Brian, it may have been something very simple that had failed and I am sure you could have fixed it for them if they had thought to ask you, what a shame.

Just a quick note to mention that I did buy the West Mountain COMspkr from a dealer in the UK and was disappointed to discover when I received them that they were supplied with a USA voltage AC mains adaptor for the DC supply. The dealer has proven to be entirely unhelpful and is now on my blacklist, unlike Elecraft who could teach him a lesson or two in how to deal with customers.

Not sure that is permitted under EU legislation...

Probably not, but he doesn't seem to care or know what he is selling, 'nuff said. Life is too short to worry about things like this, I shouldn't get worked up about it, but I do.

Some better news, in my collection of old stuff I found a small wall power supply that is of older non switched mode design, (you can tell by the weight apart from anything else), it was actually from a pair of powered speakers that I no longer use with an older computer and had the correct connector. It is slightly higher output DC voltage than the one the manufacturer supplied, but I presume that the regulator in the speaker amp will handle it. (I could find no information on the input voltage limits of the speaker either on the product or the box/leaflet). Anyway, tested it with the KX3 this morning and it all sounds fine, plenty of volume and no rattles or resonance, no breakthrough from mobile phone RF close by. Nice to have stereo on the speakers for the audio effects like Delay and Pitch in the KX3. All is well, 73 David Anderson GM4JJJ ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |

Yes David very hard to beat speakers for the K3/KX3 considering the price. I
have been using mine for almost 2 yrs. 73, Fred/N0AZZ K3 Ser # 6730--KX3 # 5210--K2/100 # 6470-KAT100 P3/SVGA--KAT500--W2 Amps Elecraft KPA500 HF/6m--Alpha's 9500 HF--87A HF--Mirage B-5030-G 300+w--(2) B-5016-G's 165w 2m -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of David Anderson Sent: Tuesday, January 21, 2014 5:46 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3: Speakers On 20 Jan 2014, at 17:04, David Anderson GM4JJJ <[hidden email]> wrote: > > Just a quick note to mention that I did buy the West Mountain COMspkr from a dealer in the UK and was disappointed to discover when I received them that they were supplied with a USA voltage AC mains adaptor for the DC supply. David,
I checked my Power supply and it is marked 9vdc at 800ma. Hard to know without opening one up whether a voltage regulator is used in the speaker itself. If your substitute PS is 12v output probably no harm will result. I find most of these wall cube PS rely on loading to bring them down to operating voltage. I'm a little surprised to find it does not run on 12vdc, though. For an item clearly designed for ham radio use it would seem logical to run on 12vdc supply. I have considered all the devices I have running on these wall cubes and wondering if might eliminate the bunch by running off the station 12v system (If they are compatible with 12v)? Certainly some of these are switchers. Glad that the end result was favorable, considering you bought the speaker on my suggestion. I wonder if one buys direct from West Mountain whether they supply EU compatible PS cubes? My guess you got a better deal buying local vs importing from the USA. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com "Kits made by KL7UW" Dubus Mag business: [hidden email] ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html |
