K3 Standard internal Noise

Leroy Buller
I am trying to trace down a noise on 40 meters, but it seems to follow the
VFO.  On the P3, the noise is a gradual jump that is 6 khz wide.  After the
vfo is not used for a while, the noise disappears.   Anyone have a
direction to travel?  Only on 40 mtrs it seems.

I’m all ears. I see it on other bands.

What type of power supply are you using?  Switcher?  Linear?  Brand and model?

I've seen that. Does putting your hand on top of the P3 change it any? Mine did. Anyway it seems to be related to the BNC cable to the K3. I put a new cable in and jiggled it some and it went away. If it comes back l'll build my own cable with quality connectors and double shielded cable. YMMV

I own several P3s and all were supplied with cables that are very
susceptible to external RFI because of their very poor quality BNC
connectors. I replaced the cables and my P3s have never had an RFI
problem again. The Elecraft supplied cables went in the trash bin.

Re: K3 Standard internal Noise

The quality of the coax is usually good, but it is the connectors that
give trouble.  If you cut off the connectors and use Amphenol connectors
you will usually have a 'quality' cable.

Better yet...  learn to make your own using Times Microwave materials or
other quality cable stock and connectors.

Re: K3 Standard internal Noise

Bob McGraw - K4TAX
In reply to this post by Don Wilhelm
That's why I say "in most installations, more connectors usually equal
more problems".   Mechanical-electro connectors are the weak link in
most all systems.

I've never burned any coax, but I sure have fried a few connectors to
the point of having them flash over internally. With low level signals,
oxidation of contacts restrict or prevent the flow of current.  For that
reason, it is good practice to "exercise" connectors to provide wiping
action of the contacts.

And then there are those "look good" connectors found at many hamfests.
Buyer beware, they aren't usually as they appear but simply "good
looking" not necessarily "good performing".  Stick with major known brands.

Re: K3 Standard internal Noise

Jim Brown-10
While there's a lot of coax around with poor quality shields, cheap
connectors, and poorly installed connectors, cause FAR more problems. My
rules are to NEVER play cheap with connectors and adapters, to ALWAYS
look first at connectors (and adapters), and to build my own cables when
possible. I've always had a strong suspicion that someone at Elecraft
was playing cheap when the vendor for those cables was chosen.

Poor quality coax shields will show up as excessive coupling of shield
current to the inside of the coax, degrading isolation between antennas
and increasing RX noise.

Re: K3 Standard internal Noise

There's enormous variance in the quality and reliability of RF
connectors; typically caused by inferior materials, manufacturing
and installation methods. Hams should never try to save a few dollars
on hamfest or cheap import connectors or cables. This is absolutely
one of the worst places to economize in your station.

The BNC connector probably has the widest quality variance of any
RF connector commonly used by hams. Why is this? In part because
the axial alignment and mating force of the male and female connector
bodies is critically important to reliable connector performance. The
spring force of the BNC bayonette and the manufacturing tolerances
of the connector must establish and maintain excellent axial connector
alignment and mating force throughout its life.

Hams experienced in using BNC connectors will often recognize a
poor quality BNC connector when the force required to engage the
bayonette is unusually low and the axial alignment of the connector
bodies is not firmly established and maintained after engaging the
connector. If you can easily manipulate the axial a lignment of a BNC
connector to its mate you probably have an unreliable BNC connector.
This is exactly what was wrong with BNC cable assemblies delivered
by Elecraft with some P3s.

I use RG188 double shielded jumpers. The shields are silver plated and connectors are gold plated where possible. I get them from Pasternack.

Hi Buck,

RF Connection, DX Engineering and Pasternack are excellent sources
for BNC and other high quality high reliability RF cable assemblies.
I'm sure there are many others.

Avoid hamfest and consumer grade cable assemblies, their quality
and reliability varies enormously.
