Just finished the K3 and have it on the air. Neat! Much to learn yet. Two questions at this point, and a request for advice from the group . . .
First question: The AF gain for the subreceiver is markedly lower than that for the RF board receiver. Anyone know what I might not have configured correctly? The config AF gain setting doesn't change it - sub still much lower than main. (The sub is on the shared antenna and the RF sensitivity seems the same.) Second question: the K3-to-KPA cable takes up the same 15-pin port as the PR6-10 is supposed to use (and a second cable from KPA to KAT uses up everything else.) Any options for connecting the preamp other than doing surgery on the cable? Many tnx for any advice anyone can offer . . . Everything checked out and I replaced the transistors with amazing ease. All the diodes appeared healthy and the voltage was spot on. Start to finish and being very careful, it took about 4 hours. I'm getting 100 watts out and all is well in Zion. I'm still getting a "High Current" warning occasionally at the first bit of transmission. Is this common/normal and should I check something else? Interestingly this is serial number #7230 but from what Don was saying it appears to have an older amp on it. I still haven't built a KPA100 so I'm not very familiar with them but it does have a shield on it as Don described. How important is that fix? Elecraft has once again endeared themselves to me. I have very little electronics back ground. To be able to open a rig and fix it is really cool. This would have been unthinkable without the help of this group. It should be set at 3.50 - if it is lower, that would explain the HiCur messages. Check your power supply voltage. It should be 13.8 volts or higher (up to 14.5 volts). The K2 tries to maintain the requested power output, and if the voltage is low, it will draw more current to produce the requested power. If CAL CUR is OK, then try to determine if it occurs only on certain bands - do not set the power control fully clockwise for one thing, keep it at 100 watts (or below) - do you still get the HiCur messages? - if not, all is well. It is not unusual to get an occasional HiCur warning on 160 or 80 meters when the power knob is fully clockwise. If you get HiCur messages on all bands, take a look at transformer T4. It should have 3 turns of white wire on the secondary winding. If it has only 2 turns, someone built it for "better efficiency at 5 watts", which should only be used with a K2 that will only be used on CW at power levels less than 5 watts. It should not be used if either the KSB2 or the KPA100 options are installed. If you get HiCur warnings only on selected bands (40m, 20m, 15m, and 10m), check the number of turns on the toroids of the Low Pass Filter in the base K2 - builders sometimes put an extra turn on the cores which will cause that problem. If the bands are 30m, 17m and 10 meters, the toroid turns on the KPA100 LPF may have an extra turn. If the KPA100 has two red core toroids near the center of the board, it is the older design. The new one has blue core toroids at RFC1 and L16 locations. So that is as much as I can tell you with the information I have. 73, Don W3FPR On 8/17/2013 12:11 PM, Stan AE7UT wrote: > The transistors arrived yesterday and I did ALL Don advised. > Everything checked out and I replaced the transistors with amazing ease. > All the diodes appeared healthy and the voltage was spot on. > Start to finish and being very careful, it took about 4 hours. > I'm getting 100 watts out and all is well in Zion. > > I'm still getting a "High Current" warning occasionally at the first bit of > transmission. > Is this common/normal and should I check something else? > > Interestingly this is serial number #7230 but from what Don was saying it > appears to have an older amp on it. It is controlled using the 2nd serial port on the Lantronix serial server (which is now almost invisible in the picture). I also found room for a dummy load. In the fall, when the leaves are gone, I plan to hang a delta loop for 20m to occupy that last port (of course I can evict the dummy load if I find space for yet another antenna). First, the desk surface must remain free of any waxes or dirt/dust, and the feet must be clean and "sticky". If that doesn't work, do what I do. I use hot glue. It works great and can be removed if you decide to move the key to a different position. I would not recommend locking it down until you've been back on CW for awhile, as your positioning preference may change, especially if you progress in speed. I've glued down both my paddle and my old Speed-X hand key on the desk, and they work fine. Cheap at WalMart, but they switched vendors and I don't think the new ones are quite as good. I'm holding an IC7000 on my desk with one right now. It would be a royal pain to have any kind of permanent mounting. I have a couple of pieces of leather I got from a Tandy store years ago. Michael's also has nice pieces about 3x6" for a buck or two. Just lay the leather down on your desk and lay the key on top of it. It gives the key an elegant look, and the key stays put for either hand. The method is untested for left or right foot. It wouldn't be a bad idea to reconsider technique including backing off the tension a little, and try to lighten up a bit. It shouldn't take brute force to hold a key in place. I'm not positive about the first issue, it may be related to the antenna
connection; there are several opportunities to select an unexpected input. It may be a TMP cable seating issue, too. On the second topic, one popular accessory is a 15-pin "Y" cable, which you can acquire from Elecraft or from other sources. We include one the KPAK3AUX cable set. You can see a picture of it here: http://www.elecraft.com/manual/E740160%20KPAK3AUX%20Cable%20Set%20Instructio ns%20Rev1c.pdf If you purchase this elsewhere, be aware that many 15-pin Y cables designed to split an SVGA video monitor signal do not wire all 15 pins "straight thru", so shop carefully. This topic has been discussed recently, it you might find it in the reflector archives if you search for "Y cable" or "KPAK3AUX". I don't know the individual part price for just the Y splitter cable, but an email to parts (at) Elecraft.com should be able to provide that. 73 de Dick, K6KR -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Dauer, Edward Sent: Sunday, August 18, 2013 9:42 AM To: [hidden email] Subject: [Elecraft] K3 Subreceiver AF Gain and PR6-10 connection Just finished the K3 and have it on the air. Many tnx for any advice anyone can offer . . . > > I'm still getting a "High Current" warning occasionally at the first > bit of transmission. > Is this common/normal and should I check something else? > > Interestingly this is serial number #7230 but from what Don was saying > it appears to have an older amp on it. Weather was pleasant, if cool. Our normal dry season had a few very light showers. Luckily the fog the stormy weather brings provides enough moisture to keep the forests from burning. Fall is coming. The trees' new growth of spring has changed into old growth and the foxgloves are all but done blooming. Cheap at WalMart, but they switched vendors and I don't think the new ones are quite as good. I'm holding an IC7000 on my desk with one right now. Never moves (inverted mobile mounting bracket on top of non-slip pad on desk). Hi Edward,
Here's a few things to check. Before you compare Main RX and Sub RX be sure to double tap A-B (#3 button). This insures that all the Main RX settings are transferred to the Sub RX. Things like NR, NB, and filter settings should be the same before making comparisons. Also with the SUB turned on check ATT and PRE using the BSET button to be sure they are the same as the Main RX. (I'm not sure if ATT and PRE are transferred to the SUB RX using the A-B double tap). Do you have the same filter in both RXs. Have you entered all the filter parameters correctly into the config files using the K3 Utility. The outer volume knob (Sub) can be configured to be a true volume control or a balance control using CONFIG:SUB AF. Check which you have chosen. 73, Mike K2MK
