K3 Tops the List!

The "official" numbers are great news, however, given
a chance to operate the K3 in this weekends ARRL DX CW contest provided the following additional info. The receiver is QUIET, even with narrow filter settings. You need to LOOK to see if the fan is running, there is no fan noise. The QSK is fast and silent. The main tuning knob is large and weighted, tunes like the best. (I use very minor friction resistance). When TUNE is pressed, you see 10 watts going out and the SWR in VERY BIG digits in the K3 display. The radio is rock solid over many hours of operation, it has not had an odd or funny happening, in fact, since I bought it. I have never performed a firmware reset to cure an "unwelcome state". It turns on the instant you press the POWER button. Sure, the radio has the specs you want in a DSP radio, but absent are a number of the practical drawbacks I've seen in the past on other radios. vy FB! de wb8yqj [Elecraft] K3 Tops the List! I also found the K3 to be a great performer in the tough condx this weekend.
I must quibble a bit about the tuning knob however. I find it just about impossible to adjust it for slight damping without feeling asymmetric drag against the felt washer. I can't get it to feel smooth, yet damped. I've been very careful in making slight adjustments and just can't find a sweet spot. I'm not loving the felt washer adjustment system - am I missing something? 73, Barry N1EU

I don't know Barry. I have no problem adjust the drag while keeping a
smooth and even rotation. Likewise here operating single band 160 in the contest. I have 306 Qs in 74 countries before our final hour of darkness, including at least two other K3s (VP6DX and F5VJC). I've not heard *any* IMD products the entire weekend and this included Friday night when I operated with the preamp on just to see if I might induce some (before the QRN front then over Texas got unbearable). Regarding the Main VFO knob, when I finished my unit I found I had a felt washer left over. Re-read the instructions and found I only installed one washer...oops! However, my knob action is silky smooth, spins freely and yet has positive action and never counter-rotates when it stops. That's exactly how I like it so I'm not adding the second washer. Others may want more friction but this is perfect for me. 73, Bill W4ZV |

I'm glad I stirred the pot just a little because I forgot about that extra mysterious felt washer that was left over from the kit build. For the heck of it, I installed the second washer and YES! The damping is much smoother now. So, free spinners might prefer one felt washer, but dampers might want to try the second washer if they're not happy with the "drag" results with one washer.
