Double Ooops?
Same here although I never went back to read the instructions - installed ONE felt washer, set the knob with minimal friction - could not be happier... Time to change the doc? !!! ;-) [Elecraft] K3 Tuning Knob (was: K3 Tops the List!) I have 306 Qs in 74 countries before our final hour of darkness, including at least two other K3s (VP6DX and F5VJC). I've not heard *any* IMD products the entire weekend and this included Friday night when I operated with the preamp on just to see if I might induce some (before the QRN front then over Texas got unbearable). Regarding the Main VFO knob, when I finished my unit I found I had a felt washer left over. Re-read the instructions and found I only installed one washer...oops! However, my knob action is silky smooth, spins freely and yet has positive action and never counter-rotates when it stops. That's exactly how I like it so I'm not adding the second washer. Others may want more friction but this is perfect for me. 73, Bill W4ZV _______________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Post to: [hidden email] You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Errata sheet C-3, November 26, 2007 called for two felt washers to be
added at Page 33 of Assembly Manual, Rev C, but this amendment was not carried forward to Rev D of the Assembly Manual. I don't know whether this was deliberate. I sent an e-mail to Wayne listing one or two other anomalies but didn't receive an acknowledgement or reply. 73 David G4DMP In a recent message, Ron D'Eau Claire <[hidden email]> wrote ... > >Very early on Wayne called for two felt washers behind the VFO A knob, but >then dropped one as several people reported your experience. > >The K3 Assembly manual has called for only ONE washer to be installed behind >each VFO knob since at least last October (Rev A of the manual that went out >with the first customer shipments), and the parts list has called for only >two washers, one for each VFO knob. > >Did I miss something? Beware...
Initially I installed just one felt washer. After a short time I noticed the tuning knob was binding against the plastic panel. This can cause scratching of the surface. I put the other washer in place and that gave sufficient spacing, however when the knob was turned it made a rubbing noise. I raided the XYL's material supply, and made up 2 washers from a softer felt. Problem solved. 73 Stewart G3RXQ On Sun, 17 Feb 2008 14:26:48 -0800 (PST), Don Rasmussen wrote: > Double Ooops? > > Same here although I never went back to read the > instructions - installed ONE felt washer, set the knob > with minimal friction - could not be happier... > > Time to change the doc? !!! ;-) > > > [Elecraft] K3 Tuning Knob (was: K3 Tops the List!) > Bill W4ZV btippett at alum.mit.edu > Sun Feb 17 16:53:34 EST 2008 > > Previous message: [Elecraft] K3 Tuning Knob (was: K3 > Tops the List!) > Next message: [Elecraft] Run for the Bacon - C6AKQ > Messages sorted by: [ date ] [ thread ] [ subject ] [ > author ] > > ---------------------------------------------------------------- > > > Barry N1EU wrote: > >> I also found the K3 to be a great performer in the > tough condx this >> weekend. >> >> I must quibble a bit about the tuning knob however. > I find it just about >> impossible to adjust it for slight damping without > feeling asymmetric drag >> against the felt washer. Page 33 of Rev C, K3 Assembly Manual (updated for Rev. C-2 ERRATA): Figure 45-1 "PLACE ONE FELT WASHER (***singular***)..." Figure 45-2 "PLACE THE KNOB ON THE SHAFT SO IT HAS THE DESIRED AMOUNT OF DRAG AGAINST THE FELT WASHERS (***plural***)..." Given the fact that my kit had an extra washer and the documentation above was inconsistent, I concluded I should have installed two washers. However, also being a firm believer in "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", I left my Main VFO knob with one washer installed. I'm very happy with the action of both it and the Sub knob (which has one washer also). 73, Bill W4ZV |

So, whats the deal now, my Rev C (Nov 15, 2007) manual said one felt washer
under the main knob. The errata sheet that came with it, Rev C-3 Nov 26, 2007 item 5 had me change that to Two felt washers. Please advise 73 de M0XDF / K3 #174 On 18/02/2008 14:16, "Bill W4ZV" <[hidden email]> sent: > > > Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: >> >> >> Very early on Wayne called for two felt washers behind the VFO A knob, but >> then dropped one as several people reported your experience. >> >> The K3 Assembly manual has called for only ONE washer to be installed >> behind >> each VFO knob since at least last October (Rev A of the manual that went >> out >> with the first customer shipments), and the parts list has called for only >> two washers, one for each VFO knob. >> >> Did I miss something? I started out with one felt washer per the manual. But then I was a little
unhappy with the adjustment/drag and added the second felt washer. I am very happy with the 2nd felt washer in place.
