K3-Tuning rate

k6dgw
I could use a suggestion or two on setting the VFO tuning rate.  I
generally like 1Hz resolution for CW/RTTY and 10Hz for SSB.  My current
settings are:

VFO CRS: 1.0
VFO CTS: 400
VFO FST: 50
VFO IND: no
VFO OFS: OFF

10Hz rate is fine.  At 1Hz, the VFO knob is too "sensitive" [too many Hz
for very little movement of the knob].  In fact, all I have to do is
touch the knob to move it enough Hz to fall out of the APF bandwidth on
CW and screw up decoding on RTTY [AFSK].  I have the knob fairly loose
so I can spin it quickly. Holding "FINE" gives me 100Hz resolution which
is fine.

I've played around with the various settings, but can't seem to find
what I want, so I thought I'd look for others' ideas and settings.

Fred,

Change VFO CTS  See the statement in the menu chart -
"VFO counts per turn (100,200. or 400).  Smaller values result in easier
fine tuning of VFO; larger values result in faster QSY."

You have yours set for the fastest rate - 200 is the default.
Yes, that will also change the 10 Hz tuning rate.
You will likely want to change VFO FST as well to get the fine tuning
you want, and that might also lead you to use the Coarse rate rather
than 10 Hz for faster QSYing.

You should have some drag on the VFO knob.  IMHO, you should not be able
to spin it for more than 3/4 turn.  With very light drag, it is more
difficult to get it to refrain from drifting a bit when you remove your
hand.  Also your fast VFO CTS contributes to this situation as well.

Fred,

You may like to do this;  the Rit/Xit knob can be programmed so that when neither Rit/Xit is being used, the knob can be used for tuning.  I think this is mentioned in the manual.  (Not to mention the P3 cursor)

I have mine so that it tunes at 100 Hz rate, and my VFO is at 1 Hz which is quickly changeable if needed.  In digital modes, I use the 'spot' button for speed.

Tuning versatility is one of the great features of the K3 and well planned.

Rich, n0ce

Re: K3-Tuning rate

Gary Gregory-2
Rich,

I have the opposite setup here.

The RIT knob is my "checking the band" tuning knob at 1Khz and the VFO is
set at 100Hz. Not everyone's idea of course but old habits die hard.
