Hi all,
Sorry if this is off topic, I have just put together my K3 s/n 08095 with the following options, KPA3, KAT3 and KXV3A I plan to add more options later when I’ve saved up some more cash. The K3 is working fine and is such a joy to use, one thing I am planning on doing is wiring up a Kantronics KAM XL tnc to the K3 to try some pactor, I’m a bit confused on this, do I have to go from the KAM XL to the RS232 port and the audio in/out connectors on the K3 or can I just use the RS232 port on the K3. any guidance on this would be gratefully received Regards Graham G7NEH ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

The Kantronics generates data as audio to modulate the K3, and decodes the received audio to put characters on your screen. You will need audio in and out to/from the K3. The RS232 port in the K3 allows a computer to control the K3, and to get information from the K3 about frequency and operating mode. It does NOT include audio. That's all I know about this box, so you'll have to study the manual to understand what to do with the serial port -- that is, does it go to the computer or to the radio, and how the Kantronics uses it. 73, Jim K9YC ______________________________________________________________ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:[hidden email] This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to [hidden email] |

The radio port on the KAM (and most other TNCs) is a DE-9 connector.
It's the same D-Shell connector that would be a 9 pin serial port. The 9 pin connector on the KAM is not a serial port. The 25 pin connector goes to your computer, and is a serial port. Typically the cable from the KAM to the radio has either a MIC connector (audio in and PTT) and a speaker connector, or it could go to separate audio and PTT jacks on the back of the K3. I don't have a K3, I have at least one KAM. <http://wa8lmf.net/miscinfo/Kantronics_TNC_Radio_Conn.pdf> 73 -- Lynn On 4/15/2014 9:38 AM, Jim Brown wrote: > On 4/15/2014 8:51 AM, Graham Pemberton G7NEH wrote: >> I’m a bit confused on this, do I have to go from the KAM XL to the >> RS232 port and the audio in/out connectors on the K3 or can I just >> use the RS232 port on the K3. > > The Kantronics generates data as audio to modulate the K3, and decodes > the received audio to put characters on your screen. Simply put, you need to connect audio out from the Kantronics to Line IN on the K3, Audio IN on the KAM to LINE OUT on the K3, PTT Out on the KAM to PTT IN (RCA or ACC) on the K3 and, if you use it FSK, on the KAM to the FSK IN pin on the K3 ACC jack. There is no RS-232 connection between the two. Your computer will use one serial port to connect to the K3 to control frequency and mode if your logging program supports that. Your computer will use *a second* serial port to connect the KAM with an appropriate *terminal emulator* or digital control program. 73, ... Hi,
Many thanks to all who replied to my post the other day, I now know how to cable the TNC to the K3 and will be making them up soon. Hi everyone!
Just built a new P3 couple of days ago. Been playing with it (naturally). Have a question about screen refresh rate in SCAN: when i set the span to something wide, like 150 or 200 and put the K3 into scan - after one or two full screens it gets kind of choppy. Starts to freeze up and skip. What do you guys normally have your refresh rate set at? Thanks in advance!
