K3 and SteppIR

David Bushinsky
Hi

My K3 communicates well with my SteppIR; the antenna follows the K3 frequency.  However I would like the K3 not to be able to transmit until the SteppIR has turned to the new frequency.  I have the tuning relay option on the SteppIR.  How do I connect it to the K3?
Thanks.

I think the tuning relay was designed for amps.  You would put it in the
ptt line.  I don't know of anyway to defeat the K3's internal keying.
The antenna specs say it can handle 100 watts while the motors are going
but I don't like to do it either.   If there is a TX inhibit on the K3
then it would need to be activated while the SteppIR is moving.

I use the Microham interfaces and they are packed for J6 so I can't test
and I don't recall if they inhibit the K3 while the antenna is moving.

N8LP makes a small device that does something like that.  Don't know the
detail of how it works, but my neighbor, N3ZZ, has one on each of his
SteppIRs.  There is also a TX Inhibit line on the K3 Aux connector (a
DB15).

SteppIR started offering something similar to the N8LP boxes which I
also have two and they go in the ptt line.  They do not inhibit the
radio they only lock out the amp.

Maybe the SteppIR device can be connected with the TX  inhibit on the K3.

David:  The microKeyer II along with a special cable from MicroHam going
from "iLink" on the MKII to "Data Out" on the SteppIR Control will do
exactly what you want.  I've been using one for over a year and no problems.

I believe locking out the amp should be enough to prevent damage to the
SteppIR.

The Station Master will inhibit keying from the internal WinKeyer as
long as the SteppIR is tuning. I think the microKeyer II also had this
feature. I don't operate enough phone to remember if they inhibit PTT in
voice modes, but I'd be surprised if they didn't.

I'm not familiar with the relay option on SteppIR but if you can ground or
activate a DC logic line, you can probably use the K3's Inhibit input to
prevent transmission when the antenna is tuning. It's a pin on the ACC
connector and you have to set the CONFIG:(TECH MODE) TX INH  to LO=Inh or
HI=Inh. If you want to use negative keying (to ground), the line requires a
pull-up resistor if none is present in the SteppIR controller.
