K3 and Windows Vista ?

Lennart Michaëlsson
Hi all,I have been using my old PC with Winndows XP ever since I got my K3
last April without any trouble downloading F/W into the K3 using the
Prolific USB converter.
Now having got a new HP (64bit)  with Vista installed I am stuck as Vista
does not support the Prolific or vice versa.
(HP does not sell any plug in USB/serial cards whih would have been a
natural solution)
I have asked Elecraft for support and I trust they are working on it. Gary
replied promptly with a possible solution. However it turned out that his
recommended converter Keyspan usa-19hs including a serial cable cannot be
found in SM and Amazon.com as an example does not export those precious
little gems outside NA.

Question to other EU K3 owners using a PC with Vista installed: How have you
solved this matter?

Many thanks in advance
Lennart

Have you tried MacHeaven in the UK  [hidden email]   also
www.macheaven.co.uk/
MacHeaven is a trading name of AllStuff Limited.

I purchased a Keyspan USA-19HS from them in May 2007,  in stock at the time.

The difficulty is obtaining device drivers for Windows Vista 64, not the
more common Windows Vista 32.  Drivers are available from Microsoft Update
for the Prolific chipset USB to Serial adapters (such as the KUSB) for
Windows Vista 32.

Lennart -

I use a 64-bit HP PC with 32-bit Vista Home Premium OS in my shack and it
runs the USB-Serial adapter just fine.  I have, however, switched to a
serial port to minimize noise in the receiver.  I am using a PCI Express
card that provides 2 ports.  These are expensive, but I am pretty sure your
HP PC has 2 unused PCI Express slots.

Is your Vista OS 64-bit or 32-bit?

If this is a desktop PC with PCI slots, could you not fit a PCI board with real serial ports on it?

A lot of people who bought Vista installed the 32bit version. As you have found, a lot of hardware does not have 64-bit drivers, and there is absolutely no advantage in running the 64-bit version unless you are running applications that need to address huge amounts of memory - typically servers.

Lennart and All,

I'm a couple days behind on some of my emails, so if this has already been
answered to your satisfaction, please excuse the bandwidth.

As for Serial/USB adapters for use with Vista, my trusty old Belkin seems to
work just fine with my K3.  I downloaded updated drivers for it, but that
was easy.  I think my model # for the Belkin is F5U106, or something like
that.  Actually, I have two Belkins, each slightly different, but they both
work.  So, I tend to recommend Belkin when these questions come up.  My
Vista machine is an HP.

K3 and Windows Vista - the solution!

Lennart Michaëlsson
In reply to this post by Dick Dievendorff
Hi Gary et al,

As you might remember I did have some problems connecting my K3 to a new PC
(HP) using Windows Vista 64-bit. The problem was connecdted to 64-bit which
still is fairly unusual.
Some good input from Gary, Elecraft and Simon (HB9DRV) turned my eyes away
from USB interfaces.
I just now installed a twin serial port (a PCI Express card), updated my K3
and is running Ham Radio deLux.
I would like to recommend this solution to anyone moving into (or up) to
Windows Vista 64.
Many thanks for valuable input,

Simon (HB9DRV)
Hi,

I guess you did *not* install any drivers yourself, rather the default
Windows drivers were used when you switched the PC on?

I don't think exsys sell outside Europe - I have their PCI and USB devices
and have never had a problem.

Lennar,

Vista and USB have nothing to do with each other. I did all my K3 firmware
updates through a Microham Digi Keyer.

The problem with USB2SER hardware and software ports is that more
applications have 'seen' the COM PORT and lock or poll them even if these
applications are not running while using the port with the K3.

The hardware solution you have now is always the best. I bought an RS232
extension card myself in case of ever having a PC without COM ports.
