Is there any way of using a foot switch to activate a constant tone for either tuning a external
antenna tuner or tuning up a linear amp instead of PUSHING IN THE "XMIT/TUNE BUTTON"??? I've got a Heil Foot-switch and headset but even when in CW mode depressing the FS only activates the xmit led but no constant-tone/carrier. Any ideas??? I'd like to see that too. That's about the only feature from my FT-2000
that I miss. I used a momentary switch hooked to my FT-2000 and it sure made tuning an amp a lot easier, at least for me. How about using a data mode and hitting PTT(the footswitch)? -----Original Message----- From: [hidden email] [mailto:[hidden email]] On Behalf Of Roger Marrotte Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2008 9:53 PM To: 'JIM DAVIS' Cc: [hidden email] Subject: RE: [Elecraft] K3 and constant tone! In CW mode plug the FS into the KEY jack.
It will look like a key and key the TX as long as you push the FS down. 73, Bob N6WG ----- Original Message ----- From: "JIM DAVIS" <[hidden email]> To: <[hidden email]> Sent: Tuesday, December 30, 2008 6:58 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and constant tone! > Is there any way of using a foot switch to activate a constant tone for > either tuning a external > antenna tuner or tuning up a linear amp instead of PUSHING IN THE > "XMIT/TUNE BUTTON"??? > > I've got a Heil Foot-switch and headset but even when in CW mode > depressing the FS only activates > the xmit led but no constant-tone/carrier. > > Any ideas??? > > Jim/nn6ee > _______________________________________________ > Elecraft mailing list > Post to: [hidden email] > You must be a subscriber to post to the list. > Subscriber Info (Addr. That will work too. but if you already have something in the Key In
jack it makes it bothersome. Its easier to put the K3 into FSK-D. Then the footswitch will do exactly what you want. That's something I did'nt even think of and it worked of course! Since I'm using a "Heil fs" I also now have PTT using SSB. I mention that because using the Heil Pro-set for the K3 did'nt really work per/se using their connector/adapter. But with the rear connections available on the rear of the K3 everything now works as I want it to. There was one poster out here who did'nt really help at ALL alluding to my own igonarance? But the others who submitted their ideas as well were much APPRECIATED!!! OH WELL! Warmest Regards ALL/Happy New Year! Jim,
On the back of the K3 is a 1/4 jack that says "KEY." Closing that with a key or a footswitch puts out full transmit power in CW or SSB (and perhaps other) modes. It is separate from the connection for paddles, or amplifier keying and I use it just as you suggest. Actually, I do a close tune at 10 W out using the TUNE button, and then push down the key for a moment to trim at full power. My usual key/paddle is an old Brown Bros CTL combination paddle and straight key that works very well in this application. (I also plan to use the straight key for SKN in a few hours!) I use a J-38 with my Viking 2 for similar purposes, so it doesn't have to be part of the paddle assembly. Regards, Joel Joel R.
